(Embargoed) CHAPEL HILL, N.C. A collaborative network of European and North American scientists, including from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, have been awarded a total of $6 million over five years to explore the biology of heart failure and to find new therapies for it.

The grant was awarded by Fondation Leducq Transatlantic Networks of Excellence Program, headquartered in Paris, France. Fondation Leducq is a French non-profit health research foundation, which is designed to promote collaborative research involving centers in North America and Europe in the areas of cardiovascular and neurovascular disease.

"Proteotoxicity: an unappreciated mechanism of heart disease and its potential for novel therapeutics" is the title of this network's award-winning project. "Proteotoxicity" refers to potential health consequences due to the failure of cells to degrade and clear intracellular aggregated proteins. This may include misshapen or misfolded proteins that could, for instance, disrupt intracellular messages and impede chemical reactions.

"Recent discoveries suggest that the failure to clear aggregated proteins is a major factor in hereditary and acquired cardiac and skeletal muscle diseases," said Network of Excellence Core member, Cam Patterson, MD, MBA, Ernest and Hazel Craige Distinguished Professor of Medicine and cardiology division chief at UNC. "This network is the first to harness the synergy between skeletal and cardiac muscle research in the emerging area of cardiac protein turnover and proteotoxicity by including experts in both fields."

The project's 3 main research aims are to (1) define the role of proteotoxicity in clinically relevant models of heart failure, (2) determine the networks of genes and gene products operating in cardiac muscle cell protein degradation and aggregation, (3) explore novel interventions to reduce and/or block proteotoxicity in animal models of cardiomyopathy and heart failure.

Sharing the new award with Patterson at UNC are network members Jeff Robbins, PhD at Cincinnati Children's Hospital in Ohio; Mathias Gautel, MD, PhD at King's College in London, England; Lucie Carrier, PhD, at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, in Hamburg, Germany; Marco Sandri, MD, PhD at the Venetian Institute of Molecular Medicine and University of Padova, Padova, Italy; and Joseph A. Hill, MD, PhD at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas.

Since 2004 when grants were first awarded under the Transatlantic Networks of Excellence in Cardiovascular Research Program, 31 collaborative networks have been selected for Leducq support, representing more than 300 investigators at 115 institutions in 17 countries, with research interests spanning from heart failure to cerebral hemorrhage.

?The Reem? video series returns: Overeem and UFC hooked up for the fans

?The Reem? video series returns: Overeem and UFC hooked up for the fansThe Reem is ready to wreak havoc permanently in America.

With Alistair Overeem signed by the UFC, anticipation is building for his Dec. 30 fight against Brock Lesnar at UFC 141.

The latest edition of "The Reem" documentary takes us through the fighter's visit to the U.S., and the Las Vegas offices of the UFC.

He stops first in Los Angeles to scout gyms where he meets up with an old friend in former UFC heavyweight Antoni Hardonk. Then it's on to Sin City to meet with UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta and sign his contract.

Overeem is jacked to be amongst the best big men in the world.

"The UFC is regarded as the No. 1 organization. That's my drive. I love challenges," said Overeem (9:55 mark).

The rabid MMA fanbase was also a factor in Overeem giving up K-1 to fight exclusively for the UFC.

"I have so many fans asking me when are you going to the UFC? It's time for you to go there. So that was a factor," Overeem said. "When I think of the possible dream match ups and the whole thing that comes with it, I'm just very excited."

Fertitta agreed that fans were vocal about seeing Overeem in the organization.

"From the UFC's standpoint, one of the goals we have is that we wanna put together the biggest fights that we can for the fans. And I think when you look at Alistair, he's obviously one of the best heavyweights in the world and the fans are demanding it. They want to see Alistair fight the best guys," said Fertitta (12:00 mark).

The clash between the massive Brock Lesnar and the imposing striker could be one for the ages.

"The fight with me and Brock, that just all excites me. He's a big guy, I'm a big guy," Overeem said (13:30 mark). "He brings it, I bring it. That fight will not go the distance."

Can I pay my auto loan payment at a local branch?

  • go to your local branch and ask them .. that?s how i pay my auto loan.

  • You?ll have to contact the bank and ask them that question.

  • Hun, you need to ask THEM. Not Yahoo.

Look them up online, I?m sure they?ll have an 800 number to call and ask.

I hate to be Mr.Obvious, but it?s the best answer I could think of.

  • Most banks that finance auto loans will accept payments in person, its one of their services they provide to get you in the door to offer you other products and services, like savings and checking accounts or CD?s.

The next time you drive by a Fifth Third branch, stop and ask. They?ll probably say yes.

Renowned surgeon-scientist receives highest award from Susan G. Komen for the Cure for career in battling breast cancer, providing compassionate care

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 28, 2011) One of the world's leading breast cancer organizations has bestowed its highest honors on Armando E. Giuliano, MD, a renowned breast cancer surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, whose 30-year research career has resulted in major advances in the compassionate care for and quality of life of women with breast cancer.

Giuliano, executive vice chair of surgery for surgical oncology in the Department of Surgery at Cedars-Sinai, was awarded the Susan G. Komen for the Cure's Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction. This is the group's highest honor for basic science and clinical research and was given to Giuliano for his lifetime work, especially his pioneering findings on lymph node removal in women with breast cancer. His studies have led to less invasive breast surgery, a reduction in the procedure's short- and long-term side effects, and improvement in the quality of life for countless women with breast cancer.

The award will be presented in December at an international gathering of breast cancer researchers and patient advocacy organizations. It is accompanied by a $25,000 award to further his breast cancer research.

Giuliano's early research included analysis of fine-needle aspiration as a diagnostic tool, comparison of mastectomy to lumpectomy and other studies that have reduced the need for radical breast cancer procedures for many patients. His research more recently has underscored the benefits of sentinel lymph node biopsy rather than complete removal of axillary lymph nodes and other breast-conserving techniques.

He made international headlines early this year with his first-of-its-kind study showing that some conventional wisdom in treating breast cancer was ineffective. That research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, showed that removal of lymph nodes in women with early-stage breast cancer has no bearing on survival outcomes. As a result, many leading medical centers have begun to change how they treat certain breast cancer patients.

At Cedars-Sinai, Giuliano also serves as associate director of surgical oncology at the medical center's Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute and is co-director of the Saul and Joyce Brandman Breast CenterA Project of the Women's Guild.

    ###

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the largest private funder of breast cancer research, investing $685 million in research since 1982. At the December conference, the organization also will honor Carlos L. Arteaga, MD, professor of Medicine and Cancer Biology at Vanderbilt University with a Brinker Award.

Differentiating a Sonnet Poem From Science Fiction Book ...

Books are regarding differing kinds. You can get those that speak on history, then some that mean the minds of some enlightened ones called as philosophical books and books who?ve poems on them. The two most distinct nevertheless converging sorts writing are poetry and science fiction. Sci fiction books offer the abstract of the items one?s destiny might become like while a sonnet poem, the latest version of poetry, is about what the modern age system is. They are diverse in the thought represented even though similar from the realization they take care of the abstract.

Science fiction book writers generally encompass the longer term during the pages they can write. The most effective examples are the types provided by Jonathan Swift, notably the Gulliver?s Travels that might be proudly proclaimed as the first true sci fiction books. Soon others followed including the publications of Voltaire and Johannes Kepler. Some eve believe that born to run Frankenstine was the initial true book to handle the abstract simply because it gave a photo connected with a dead body being delivered to life which might not be scientifically that a long way away. Similar books have fallen and gone just some remain around today. These abstract creations remain dear to us a result of picture they paint into the future. Some of the books that kids love reading too come under the concept of science fiction. For example, the Gi joe novels are common pure sci-fi that depicts things into the future as is also actually going to be.

As discussed before, the complete complete opposite of sci-fi is sonnet poems. Traditionally a sonnet is understood to be a poem with only 14 lines. The specialty for these poems is the fact that a physical object is determined with pure emotions from the author rrnstead of his imagination. This brings in the abstract nature proper sonnet poem. A very prolific author of sonnets of all time was William Shakespeare who wrote some 154 sonnets during his lifetime out of which quite a significant amount may be famous and studied vigorously as educational English text work. The revolutionary day sonnet poem is slightly different within the fact they deal more while using the abstract compared to emotions yet retaining the 14 line stanza layout. A fairly lot of writers are today churning out volumes of sonnets all this what is known as dying talent is seeing a renaissance of sorts. The lines from a sci-fi book and sonnet is soon to vanish because the poems themselves shall depict what might happen when you need it.
