BAGHDAD ? The top military adviser to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki says foreigners were among the gunmen who hijacked a bus in a Sunni-dominated Iraqi region last week and killed 22 Shiite pilgrims.
Gen. Farouk al-Araji refused to say why he believes some of the Arab suspects are not Iraqi but cited "evidence supporting our claims."
He said Sunday the group of gunmen appeared to have additional help from outside Iraq but would not specify how.
Al-Maliki has been trying to tamp down sectarian tensions between local officials in the Shiite city of Karbala, where the pilgrims were from, and Iraq's western Sunni Anbar province, where the hijacking happened last Monday.
Four suspects are being held in the case, and four others were released due to lack of evidence.
