If you go down to the Centre today you?re in for a big surprise?
A secret currently awaits students in the depths of the Sport and Aquatic Centre. Like many students, you may have dived into the pool, sweated it out in the gym or battled on the badminton court, but have you ever ventured beyond the obvious and discovered the gem that is Macquarie University?s Hall of Fame Museum?
The Museum rewards those who find it with a fresh and innovative journey through sport at Macquarie University. Located on Level 0, the Macquarie University Sporting Hall of Fame was launched in March 2009 and is the first university sporting museum in Australia.
The museum embodies the triumphs and sacrifices of extraordinary Macquarie University athletes who have proven their abilities on a world stage and, through dedication and self-sacrifice, persevered to ensure that sport at our university has achieved the highest level of excellence.
Special features of the museum include a state-of-the-art display cabinet, which displays a rapidly growing collection of sporting memorabilia. Look out for the original leather rugby boots worn for our first major sporting victory: the winning field goal in extra time against Cammeray-Northbridge?at the Judd Cup in 1967, the club?s inaugural year.
Look up at the ceiling and you will discover a video of sports scholarship-holding athletes competing in karate, judo, tennis and basketball, creating an atmosphere of competition by Lindley Joyner. In addition, a rotating image series encapsulates the University?s strong sporting heritage and competitive history with personal stories of accomplishments as voiced by Bob Lawton, Executive Officer of the Macquarie University Sports Association from 1972 ? 2003.
The current exhibition showcases the history of the sporting clubs from the inception of sport at Macquarie University. Launched in October 2010, this four-part series commenced with ?Origins of Our Sporting Heritage?, which offers insight into Macquarie University?s sporting foundations from 1967 ? 1977. The exhibition was the result of months of research and tracking down Macquarie University Sport Club alumni.
After tapping into their university memories, many alumni kindly donated collections of equipment, medals and clothing that had previously been relegated to dusty lofts. As Cindy Hoad, Manager of Sport & Recreation says, ?The opportunity to re-engage alumni and forge links which had previously been lost has proved invaluable, both for the collection and for sport at Macquarie University.?
The exhibition will close in early October to make way for the second exhibition in the series, ?Our Sporting Evolution?, which recognises the evolution and growth of our sport clubs from 1978 ? 1988 and highlights the vast effort, team work and spirit that it took to build the sporting community. Macquarie University prides itself on its great sporting traditions, which are a result of the growth and sustainability of its sport clubs.
All students are encouraged to come up the hill and and visit the Sporting Hall of Fame Museum, open every day from 9:00AM to 7:00PM. For more information or to arrange a tour, contact Ashleigh Thomson, Curator, on 02 9850 6587 or ashleigh.thomson@mq.edu.au.
