Will Solar Projects Need Tax Equity in the Future? - Cool Green ...

I?ve written in various places about the need for tax equity to finance renewable energy projectsparticularly solar. I was under the assumption that tax equity may be a thing of the past. Now, I?m not so sure. You may know that the investment tax credit (ITC) declines from 30 percent to 10 percent of eligible capital costs in 2017. In addition, at the end of 2012, the current 50 percent ?bonus? depreciation expires, further alleviating the need for tax equity. While those circumstances lessen the need for tax equity, they likely don?t eliminate it.

So, how much tax equity will be needed after the tax benefits shift? The analysis in Table 1 attempts to answer that question by calculating the value of tax benefits under the current and future incentive structures for a $100 solar project. The value of the tax benefits is about $52 under the current incentive levels, or 52 percent of the initial project costs. In 2017, after the ITC and depreciation benefits revert to their former levels, the value of the tax benefits drop to $35, or 35 percent of the initial project costs.

In developing the analysis, I assume a 35 percent tax rate and a 10 percent internal rate of return (IRR) requirement (i.e., the discount rate that sets the net present value (NPV) to $0). The tax benefits represent the combined value of the ITC and the depreciation schedule known as the five-year Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS).

Table 1 goes out six years, as ?five-year? MACRS actually carries into year six of the project (using ?half-year? convention, the benefit assumes the project starts at the mid-point of year one). The value of the depreciation schedule in Table 1 is represented by the allowed annual deduction the tax rate the ?depreciable basis.? The depreciable basis, per IRS code, is calculated as the eligible project costs less one-half the ITC value. When the ITC is 30 percent, or $30 in our example, the depreciable basis equals $85 [i.e., $100 ($30/2)]. When the ITC declines to 10 percent, or $10, the depreciable basis will increase to $95 [i.e., $100 ($10/2)]. Importantly, this negates some of the reduction in the ITC.

At 35 percent of initial project costs, the value of the tax benefits even after they decline may be too large to absorb within the project or cost-effectively carry forward. To compete in the market, solar developers may need to monetize the tax benefits via a third-party investment known as tax equity. Until now, tax equity has been in short supply.

The reason this is important is the industry is looking ahead for new asset classes to finance renewable energy projects such as securitization, long-term debt instruments, real estate investment trusts (REITs), and master limited partnerships (MLPs). These instruments, which each effectively pool investments and sell off tradable securities, hold the promise of accessing vast swaths of as-yet untapped capital. By creating a liquid, tradable ownership share, or security, these asset classes reduce risk and enable investment by casual investors or money managers who are not necessarily experts in renewable energy (think pension funds).

Unfortunately, use of these mechanisms may be hindered if tax equity capital is needed to monetize the tax benefits. The tax benefits are critical to lowering the cost of energy from a renewable project but unfortunately may not flow to the owners of the new asset classes mentioned. For example, the tax credits cannot be easily transferred to passive investors such as owners of stocks or other securities. Therein lies the rub new asset classes such as securitization offer the potential to tap low-cost capital, but traditional support mechanisms such as tax credits and accelerated depreciation may complicate the pathway.

However, accessing tax equity may be getting easier, through baby steps, along the path towards securitization and other asset class application. First, Clean Power Finance (CPF) is a financing entity that effectively pool projects to a size necessary to access tax equity. CPF offers a suite of software tools to evaluate system design and project economics. Developers that use CPF?s tools may also qualify for project financing. Financing qualification relies on passing certain due diligence requirements regarding installation practices and project evaluation. According to CPF, their partnership enables developers to tap tax equity and debt investment pooled by the firm. CPF investors include Kleiner Perkins and Google, among others.

Second, SolarCity has been developing an asset-backed securitization of its project portfolio. The company was targeting ?early 2012,? although no public information has been made this year as of this publication date. The financing facility would securitize the stream of projected customer payments and could be sold to a wide array of investors. Although, this move represents the pooling of one developer?s portfolio, enabling market investment in a securitized product could ease the way for smaller, regional players who don?t have the capability to raise such capital on their own.

Teen cancer survivor prepares for fourth Poway 'Relay' - Pomerado ...

By Pat Kumpan

Cancer survivor Alexis Johnson is gearing up for the April 21-22 Relay for Life at Lake Poway.

Cancer survivors Alexis Johnson, left, and Peggy Osterhout are preparing for the Relay for Life April 21-22 in Poway.

She is heading the call to arms, encouraging other survivors to offer hope to those fighting the dreaded disease.

?We need more survivors to sign up,? Johnson said. ?That?s what this relay is all about.?

Johnson knows that during her own plight with osteosarcoma, a bone cancer that typically afflicts boys, she was inspired by those who fought and won their fight with cancer.

This marks the fourth year that Johnson, a 19-year-old Poway High School alumna, has participated by forming a team, ?Cure for Kids? and serving on a relay committee, but her first year as survivor chairwoman.

She continues to gain support and pledges for her team from several local families with children and teens afflicted with cancer. While some kids have lost the battle, other kids, and adults, will carry on this year to raise money for the American Cancer Society in its pursuit to find a cure, Johnson said.

This month?s relay begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 21 at the lake?s recreation area, 14644 Lake Poway Road and finishes at 9 a.m. the next day. Survivors will walk a victory lap at 9:30 a.m., while others will take laps throughout the day to fulfill their pledge commitment. Several participants will camp out that night and light luminarias to honor loved ones who either continue to fight cancer, or have lost their battle.

According to Johnson and her mentor, Peggy Osterhout, another cancer survivor, seeing the lit candles inside the tiny brown bags is the ultimate emotional experience. Guests often drop by to witness the view, the duo said.

Osterhout, who has had five family members die from cancer, said a bagpiper plays during the ceremony adding to the sentimental moment.

The Poway resident continues to head her own team, ?Memories,? one of several local teams, which can be accessed by going online to www.relayforlife.org/poway.ca.

Family games and other activities are scheduled throughout the event and those who want to donate $10 for a luminaria can call 858-231-1597. All proceeds from the luminarias and pledges benefit the American Cancer Society for research and patient services.

Johnson was diagnosed in 2008 with osteosarcoma, or bone cancer, which typically afflicts boys. After several cancer treatments and surgeries, which left her with nerve damage to her leg, she ultimately decided to have her leg amputated, opting for more functionality with a prosthesis.

?People are unsure of it and little kids are curious (about it),? Johnson said. ?But I?m getting used to it.?

As a cancer survivor, she has learned to eat healthier, has a new daily exercise routine and is adjusting to life ? a ?new normal? ? with a prosthesis.

?Eventually, I?ll be able to run,? she added. ?My parents and family said it was all up to me when I decide to have the amputation.

Osterhout said Johnson is an inspiration to her.

?Alexis came to one of the relays in a wheelchair right after being hospitalized,? Osterhout said.

Johnson kept a poem by Osterhout pinned to her hospital wall during the surgeries, called ?Here I Am,? about ?living life, loving life? as a cancer survivor, words of hope, Johnson said.

Despite their age difference, being cancer survivors makes them sisters in spirit, they said. Who else can understand what being a cancer survivor means?

Dinosaur mom preserved with unlaid eggs

A mysterious birdlike dinosaur was about to lay her eggs when she perished some 70 million years ago in what is now Patagonia, researchers have found.

The scenario is based on the discovery of two dinosaur eggs lying near the partial skeletal remains of an alvarezsaurid dinosaur, which was a type of small maniraptoran, a group of theropod dinosaurs believed to be the line that eventually led to modern-day birds.

Alvarezsaurids are bizarre among dinosaurs, scientists have said, due to their short, massive forelimbs tipped with a single digit sporting a gigantic claw. The dinosaurs also show highly birdlike skeletons, even though they were flightless.

The team named the dinosaur Bonapartenykus ultimus in honor of Jose Bonaparte, who in 1991 discovered the first alvarezsaurid in Patagonia.

The dinosaur eggs were found less than 7.9 inches (20 centimeters) from the partial skeleton and seemed to belong to that individual dinosaur. The researchers ruled out a postmortem mixing that brought the two together. The partial skeleton was also articulated, which would likely not be the case if they had been transferred there after death.

In addition, the researchers didn't find evidence of calcium resorption, which happens in the later stages of embryonic development when embryos suck up calcium for bone growth from the inner lining of the egg, according to study researcher Martin Kundrat of Uppsala University in Sweden.

After various microscopic analyses of the bones and eggs, along with eggshells found in the area, the researchers speculate the two eggs, each about 2.8 inches (7 cm) in diameter, may have been inside the oviducts of the female Bonapartenykus when she died.

"So it looks like we have indirect evidence for keeping two eggs in two oviducts," Kundrat told LiveScience. "They were close to being laid, but the female didn't make it."

When analyzing eggshell fragments, found to belong to B. ultimus, the researchers discovered fossilized fungi; such contamination affects bird eggs today, Kundrat said. "It looks like at the very late stage the eggs could suffer from the same contamination as in common birds," he said during a telephone interview. "It doesn't mean it must kill the embryo, because usually in the embryonic space or inner space it's still protected by a very dense network of organic fibers called the shell membrane."

The finding, which will be detailed in the June 2012 issue of the journal Cretaceous Research, shows that early alvarezsaurids persisted in what is now South America until latest Cretaceous times, Kundrat said.

It is definitely imperative to give instructions to unknowledgeable individuals regarding how to live a proactive green life-style, and also individuals that ignore constant warnings that happen to be arising in every single direction, most definitely in those regions that use the most energy and consequently pollute our environment.

Forming a LED light bulb is the very first step that people have made in order to preserve our planet and in addition, every individual have the right to decide whether or not to join in with this life changing activity that could eventually save mankind.

However, although tricky, it is possible to find a web design company that can provide the ideal combination of quality and affordability.

Business owners should not just look at prices when reviewing the web design quotes they get, but they should also carefully review the services included in the price. Some companies may give a lower quote for a web design package, but they also offer inadequate services. Apart from looking at the prices, assess the quality of the website design they offer; custom-made websites are better than websites with generic templates. Another important thing to consider is a web designer?s ability to create websites that are visible in search engines. It is not sensible to establish an online store if online users can?t even find it. Additional services that a web design firm may offer are support and training when it comes to administering an ecommerce store.

Well: To Treat Sleep Apnea, Some Shed a Mask

About 28 million Americans have sleep apnea, which causes repeated awakenings and pauses in breathing during the night, sometimes resulting in loud snoring and gasps for air. For decades, the standard treatment has been ?continuous positive airway pressure.? A mask worn at night pushes air into the nasal passages, enabling easier breathing. C.P.A.P. reduces and in some cases completely prevents episodes of apnea. But the mask is like something from a bad science fiction movie: big, bulky and obtrusive. Many patients simply refuse to wear it or rip it off while asleep. Studies show that about half of all people prescribed C.P.A.P. machines stop using them in one to three weeks.

?For a lot of people out there, the C.P.A.P. machine turns into a doorstop,? said Dr. Joseph Golish, the former chief of sleep medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. ?C.P.A.P. is very effective in the sleep lab. But when people go home, there?s a good chance they won?t use it, and the success rate of an unused C.P.A.P. machine is absolutely zero.?

Now an alternative form of C.P.A.P. is gaining popularity: a patch that fits over the nostrils. Called Provent, the patch holds two small plugs, one for each nostril, that create just enough air pressure to keep the airways open at night. It is far less intrusive than the traditional C.P.A.P. machine. It is also more expensive, and it doesn?t work for every patient.

Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2008, Provent has spread mostly by word of mouth. But it has caught on fast. Its manufacturer, Ventus Medical, says it has shipped one million of the devices in the past 12 months, up from a half million total in the two years prior. Doctors say it has given them a new weapon in the battle against sleep apnea, and many patients who struggled with C.P.A.P. call it a godsend.

Bob Bleck, who owns a computer networking firm in Ohio, struggled with poor sleep and chronic fatigue for decades. But it was only a year and a half ago that he finally went to a sleep clinic, prodded by his wife, who worried about his heavy snoring.

The diagnosis was severe sleep apnea. Tests showed that in a typical night, Mr. Bleck, 47, awoke or stopped breathing 42 times an hour.

His doctor prescribed a C.P.A.P. machine, and Mr. Bleck hated it.

?I had this constricted feeling,? he said. ?It would be incorporated into these dreams where I was tied up, like in the movie ?Alien.? It was more difficult to sleep with that thing on then to just get through the night with the apnea.?

Mr. Bleck got rid of the machine after he discovered Provent. ?After I started using it, I noticed a difference right away,? he said. ?My symptoms subsided dramatically.?

Provent works like a traditional C.P.A.P. machine but is only a fraction of the size. When people with apnea fall asleep, their throat muscles collapse, constricting the airway and causing the body to fight for air. C.P.A.P. machines use mild air pressure to keep the airway from constricting.

Provent does too, but in a different way. The device contains two pinhole-size valves, one over each nostril. The valves let air in easily ? most people breathe through their nostrils while asleep ? but there is resistance as the user exhales. That resistance creates a backpressure in the airways, dilating the muscles that would otherwise collapse in the middle of the night. In the morning, the patch is removed; a new one is used every night.

Last year, in a large study of 250 apnea sufferers published in the medical journal Sleep and subsidized by Ventus, researchers found that those who used Provent devices over a three-month period saw their apnea episodes fall sharply, compared with people who were given a sham, or placebo, device. A follow-up study tracked people over the course of a year and had similar results.

But not everyone finds that Provent alleviates their apnea. In interviews, sleep specialists said that a third or more of patients do not end up using it.

?It works like a champ in some people and doesn?t work on other people,? said Dr. Nancy Appelblatt, an ear, nose and throat surgeon in Sacramento who has prescribed it to about 100 patients. ?All sleep apnea is not created equal.?

Some people, for example, breathe through the mouth at night, not the nostrils. In those people, Provent typically doesn?t work. Nor will it work very well in someone who has severe nasal allergies and has a blocked nose at night, said one of the leaders of the Provent studies, Dr. Meir H. Kryger, a professor at Yale Medical School and founder of the National Sleep Foundation.

Unlike C.P.A.P., Provent is not covered by Medicare and most major insurers, though some doctors say they expect that will change in the near future. In the meantime, a 30-day supply of the patches costs $65 to $80.

Dr. Lee A. Surkin, a cardiologist and sleep medicine specialist in Greenville, N.C., said patients typically start with a 10-day trial pack that costs $10. He has prescribed Provent to about 300 of his patients.

?The No. 1 reason people don?t continue it is the out-of-pocket expense,? he said.

For now, Dr. Kryger and others say that C.P.A.P. will continue to be the gold standard, and certainly the first option for patients with severe apnea. But for the roughly 50 percent of patients in whom C.P.A.P. fails, Provent may be a reliable alternative.

Dr. Surkin said some patients use C.P.A.P. at home, but take their pocket-size Provent patches with them when they travel to avoid the hassle of lugging a machine through airports.

?To me, it?s a miracle,? said Joyce Nemoga, 64. Ms. Nemoga, who lives in Baldwin Harbor, N.Y., has moderate apnea that caused her to snore and gasp in her sleep. She tried C.P.A.P. but could not sleep comfortably with the device.

?Every time you turn over, you have to take the hose with you,? she said. ?I tried it for six months, and I don?t think I had one full night of sleep the whole time.?

A doctor suggested Provent, and Ms. Nemoga saw quick results.

?I?m just so happy that I found it,? she said.

Analysis: Asia gauges inflation through rear-view mirror

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Depending on where you look, Asia's inflation is either benign or stubbornly hot.

China's March inflation rate stayed below Beijing's 4 percent target and appeared to be on a softening trajectory, and South Korea's dropped to a 20-month low. But other figures show price pressures actually picked up last month, and factories paid more for raw materials.

The disconnect stems from the way inflation is measured. The primary indicator in many Asian economies compares prices against a year earlier, not the prior month as is common in the United States and Europe.

That can be misleading.

Asia's inflation looks tame now largely because prices were high a year ago, when oil spiked because fighting in Libya threatened supplies, and shortages of pork and other food drove up costs. Economists call that the base effect.

Central bankers trying to calibrate interest rates need to know where prices are headed, not where they've been. Otherwise, they risk missing the warning signs of a build-up in inflation that will only become harder to contain.

"The month-on-month data gives you a better gauge of the inflation pulse, what's happening right now," said Rob Subbaraman, chief Asia economist for Nomura in Hong Kong. "I'm a little bit skeptical of looking too closely into the year-on-year numbers now."

Each data set has its limitations.

Few of the statistics agencies in Asia adjust data for seasonal factors, such as the Lunar New Year which distorts month-on-month readings in China and some neighboring economies every January and February.

Comparing year to year solves that problem, but introduces another set of concerns over base effect and timeliness.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Food inflation back on the table:

China March inflation:

GRAPHIC on commodity prices: http://r.reuters.com/hyk57s

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Seasonal adjustment is notoriously difficult to get right. Some economists think the U.S. government mismeasured seasonal shifts in the labor market this past winter, reporting an abnormally sharp drop in the jobless rate.

Nomura's Subbaraman said he thinks inflation will become a bigger problem for Asia later this year. Rising commodity prices, easy monetary policy and tight labor markets suggest that as demand picks up, inflation will quickly follow.

The Bank of Korea and Bank Indonesia both hold policy-setting meetings this week, and are expected to keep rates steady, mindful of the inflation threat even though price pressures are currently subdued.

CONFLICTING SIGNALS

China's inflation numbers on Monday were a case study in how confusing the data can be. The consumer price index rose 3.6 percent year on year, more than economists polled by Reuters had expected. But a measure of producer prices pointed the other way, dropping 0.3 percent from a year earlier.

That suggests little inflationary pressure in the pipeline because manufacturers would feel the effects of rising costs before consumers do.

Yet the month-on-month figure showed the producer price index rose 0.3 percent between February and March, which indicates price pressures may indeed be building.

Because China does not seasonally adjust the data, it is hard to read too much into changes between February and March. The lunar new year fell in January this year, so prices for food and other holiday-related items spiked that month and then eased somewhat in February. The pickup in March may have had more to do with the fact that prices had subsided in February.

Food was the primary driver behind the unexpected pickup in the March CPI, although unlike a year ago the main culprits were fruits and vegetables, not pork.

Vishnu Varathan, an Asia economist with Mizuho in Singapore, said he was "watchful" of signs that inflation was re-emerging as a threat, but saw little to fear in Monday's data. High pork prices persisted last year, but it takes longer to rear a pig than to grow a cabbage.

"What we know about food inflation tells us there's no reason to get distressed," he said. "What we know about fuel inflation tells us there may be a problem but it hasn't come home to roost yet."

Varathan said he would be more worried about Asia's inflation threat if conflict in the Middle East sent oil prices back up to 2008's record high near $150 per barrel.

WHAT'S EATING ASIA

Food and energy account for about 40 percent of the consumer price index basket in most Asian economies outside of Japan, so watching commodities provides the clearest window into where inflation is heading.

Commodity price moves also explain why the yearly inflation data clashes with the month-on-month figures.

The Thomson Reuters-Jefferies CRB index <.crb>, a broad measure of commodity prices, fell by as much as 15 percent from mid-March 2011 to mid-March 2012. But it was up 1.5 percent from mid-February to mid-March this year.

Even more worrisome to some inflation watchers is how rising commodity prices seem to be filtering through the economy and ultimately into higher wages. The big worry is a wage-price spiral, where pricier goods lead to higher wage demands, which in turn feeds back into higher prices.

China has been at the forefront of raising wages. Its latest five-year economic plan calls for an average annual minimum wage increase of 15 percent through 2015. Rival exporting economies may follow their lead, knowing that they too can boost wages without losing their competitive edge.

Rahul Bajoria, an economist with Barclays in Singapore, points out that wage hikes have been implemented or planned in Thailand, Malaysia and parts of Indonesia, bolstering his view that inflation pressures are building.

"The trough in inflation is going to be a lot shallower than what we were earlier expecting," Bajoria said. "You have to look beyond the headline (inflation rate) and understand that the price dynamics are turning a bit more unfavorable."

Courtship rituals can be all-consuming, demanding time and effort but now scientists have discovered why it might be worth it

Courtship rituals can be all-consuming, demanding time and effort but now scientists have discovered why it might be worth it.

Attracting a mate which can take significant effort, such as in a peacock's show of feathers or the exhaustive rutting of stags can produce benefits for a species in the long term, a study suggests.

Scientists have shown that animals and plants which reproduce sexually are at a considerable advantage to those species such as some insects and reptiles that reproduce without a partner.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh studied sexual reproduction in tiny fruit flies to learn more about how DNA is randomly shuffled when the genes of two parents combine to create a new individual.

They found that this recombination of genetic material allows for damaging elements of DNA which might cause disease or other potential drawbacks to be weeded out within a few generations. Individuals who inherit healthy genes tend to flourish and pass on their DNA to the next generation, while weaker individuals are more likely to die without reproducing.

The findings, made possible by genome sequencing technology, provide strong evidence to back up a long-standing theory that sexual reproduction, rather than asexual cloning of an individual, has long-term benefits for a species.

Scientists studied how the DNA of fruit flies is affected when the recombination of DNA does not occur. They found that harmful DNA quickly accumulates, making the species weaker overall in the long term.

Researchers say the findings may help inform the development of crop species with high yields. The study, published in Genome Biology and Evolution, was supported by the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Natural Environment Research Council.

Charlie Murder Preview: Heavy Metal Gaming, Dude

You have not heavy metal enough for Charlie Murder. From the studio that brought you Dishwasher Samurai comes a game about head stomps, throwing knives, and fashion. Charlie Murder comes across as a Castle Crashers dipped in black ink, but behind that vampire smile lies a depth that only a few RPGs dare to touch.

The demo starts out simply with you in hell fighting demons. From there, Charlie Murder only gets crazier. As the medics bring your crew back to life, you find yourself in the middle of the zombie invasion. Punch, kick, and grab your shambling assailants with your typical light and heavy combos. Find a well-placed spike or electric pole to instantly kill your foe with a good throw.

In just a couple of minutes, the streets became littered with heads, swords, and other assorted body parts that we could pickup and throw at the next opponent. You?ll also be searching for health items that you?ll frequently need to down in order to keep yourself alive. If you lose all your life, a friend can defib you back onto the scene with a couple of quick strokes of the thumb sticks. Just remember to keep clear.

Each of the characters comes with their own powers that match their look. I played with the singer who had a streak of pink hair very similar to one of the developers on the booth. Her special powers revolved around her voice with a mighty shout to move people away or another to make them start fighting other enemies. Another power let me surround myself in a swirl of safety pins. Now if I could only fight balloon doggies.

Other assorted powers that continued to pop up from the rest of the members summoned demons from the underworld, send out saw blades, and caused one of the players to pull out the drums to play along with the pain. Since each of the characters come from the same band, moves mimic things you would see in the middle of a mosh pit or reflect the instrument they play. Of course that?s how they got into this mess in the first place, by leaving one member of the band behind.

Part cut scene and part Rock Band set; you mash your way through the song playing under the story of your band coming together and the one that was left behind. Again, the team over at Ska Studios makes sure that there?s a little metal in every thing you do.

And what?s more metal than looking good? With every coin you find along the way, you earn money to buy new clothing, health items, and tattoos to up your stats. With every level, you?ll need to pick the stats you want to level as well as perks such as more health or better drops to keep you rolling in coin. Use your phone to snap certain pics to find hidden items. After a good round of fighting, you?ll need to take a breather just to check out all the loot you found along the way.

Charlier Murder is the game you need to know about if you are a fan of mayhem and metal. Developers guess that it will be another year before we can wrap our thumbs around the final product, but you can bet that we?ll be throwing horns to this downloadable game when it finally comes out.

Cricket 101: The IPL (Indian Party League) Is Here ? Angela's ...

IPL and friends like Joshi...makes for a perfect night! There were about 10 of my friends there and it made for a SUPER night.

After living in Barcelona for the past decade and feeling the power of football (that?s soccer for some of you) and seeing first-hand the amazing displays of pride by the FC Barcelona fans who are famous for taking to the streets in the hundreds of thousands to celebrate a victory? I really thought I had seen it all when it comes to sports fever.? But once again Bangalore has shown me a new side of life that I never knew existed.? Well, a new side of the sporting life anyway.? And it turns out that our beloved?Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the action packed IPL are not just about cricket!

IPL fever is on like Donkey Kong!? RCB is trained up and raring to go and the city itself is primed and ready.? But the KSCA preparing for the matches is only the tip of the IPL iceberg for us here in Bangalore.

From where I?m standing so far, the ?P? in IPL stands for Party?and the Indian Party League season is here!

Parties seem to be divided into two general themes.? The first are events to draw in a crowd to venues with big screen TVs during RCB away games or when other teams are playing.? The second is the infamous after-parties that take place at the 5 star hotels and hot spots after a home game.

Rafi from Plugg Fashions and the fabulous Dj Whosane!

I had my first taste of an IPL match party on Day 2 of the league.? Geoffrey?s at Hotel Royal Orchid threw their first big cricket party of the season and my mates and I didn?t want to miss it.? Geoffrey?s played host to a few of our favourite local cricketers (who will go unnamed since they came on their own and not under an official capacity), but who joined the party and hung out for about an hour.? The ambiance was fantastic, happily pumped up by my sweet friend DJ Whosane! who was asked to fly down from Mumbai to play the party.

The rains in Kolkata delayed the game but the party was in full swing and no one seemed to mind.? There was a guest list and the party was being promoted by one of the leading event management companies in town, Plugg Fashion.? My friends and I sipped cocktails, nibbled on food, watched the game on the big screen, mingled with a few cricketers ? all to the groovy sounds of one of India?s top DJs.? And when Bangalore?s hot local DJs like Ivan and Yon show up to the party, you know it?s ?cuz it?s rockin?.? Not a bad way to spend a Thursday night if you ask me!

Well, this scene repeats itself in some form all over town, from cool sports bars like Dugout in Koramangala to the big screens at swank venues like Skyye.? They even attract a really healthy number of girls, which is a welcome treat from the typical Indian sausage fest that most bars breed.? Every game night of IPL is treated like a special event ? especially the away games ? and the non-stop parties are an expected part of the hoopla here in Bangalore.? I?ve really never seen anything like it.? Sure, back in Barcelona friends gathered to watch the hot games at bars but the parties were never promoted like they are here.? Major brands didn?t have tie-ups with the venues to openly showcase their products. ?Bars didn?t splash out cash to professional event companies like Hydrooo and Plugg Fashion just to promote their IPL-themed parties night after night to attract fans to their big screens.? And there certainly weren?t cover charges ranging from Rs. 500 ? 1,500 to enter a bar or club during sporting events.

Had a super time with Tamanna and Rafi at Geoffrey's IPL party!

But this is Bangalore and things work a bit differently here.? From my point of view, it?s not that cricket fans are more passionate or less passionate than football fans but bars and clubs play by different rules here and cricket parties are an expected, inherent and widely anticipated part of the game.? At least with the group of friends I have and the circles that I run in.

Now with that said, I know from researching the topic that millions of fans watch the matches at home with their families, away from the alcohol and nightlife scene but my core group of friends are simply not like that so as always my main source of information on the topic is coming from my driver Shiva.? When a good match is on he and his family will all watch it together in the comfort of their living room and he and his wife allow their children to stay up long past their bedtime to watch.? One thing I find interesting is that they don?t prepare a special spread of food and drinks, which is massively popular back in the US and the excuse for lots of indulgence and for many a BBQ!? Later, once the match is over, Shiva will go outside and congregate with the other men in the neighbourhood and discuss the game (the ladies stay indoors), often times with one of the neighbours setting off crackers to celebrate a victory.

Well, to be totally honest, what I?m really looking forward to with any luck is attending an ?old school? IPL after-party this season.? Not the standard ?let?s all meet up party? but one of the authentic sponsored parties that I?ve heard so much about.? These infamous after-parties take place in cities all around India after the games but today they don?t seem to exist on the same level as they did in the past.? To date, my only experience with a post-game after-party was during the 2011 Champions League and I definitely had a blast, hanging out with the players from the South Australian Redbacks and England?s Somerset Sabres.

When they first started up, the ?let loose? ambiance and the decadence of the official IPL after-parties drew in massive amounts of celebrities from not only the sports world but also the various film industries, along with the who?s-who of each city, the major big wigs of India and of course the sexy ? predominantly white ? cheerleaders.? But over time the parties reportedly became wilder and wilder and that had to end so now they seem to only exist as a tamer version of their former, more glorious, predecessors.

In India, cricket is not just a game?it?s a war!? We are only in the first week of IPL and excitement levels are already brewing.? With eight away games for Royal Challengers Bangalore and eight home games, we all have ample opportunity to watch the matches live at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, at home with family or at one of the dozens of hoppin? parties around town, which is where you will find me and my friends.? I?ll report back periodically with updates on the experiences of this white girls first IPL season in Bangalore ? from the vibe in the stadium to the funny antics that occur watching the game on the big screens, I?m sure there will be lots to share!

XOXO Angela
