Sundorne Sports Village and West Mercia Police, to name but a few.

Shropshire Councillor for Sundorne, Karen Burgoyne, said:

?We?re hoping for a great turnout at the event, which is the result of some months of planning and hard work by a number of agencies. Also for fine weather to complete what promises to be a really good day!?

CLUE Reports, Credit Scores, and Car Insurance Rates

CLUE Reports, Credit Scores, and Car Insurance RatesIf you?re comparing car insurance costs, understanding CLUE Reports, credit scores, and car insurance can help save you money. Car insurance rates and premiums are calculated with information gleaned from your Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (CLUE) report. Like a credit report, the CLUE offers historical information about you to property & casualty companies like car insurers.

Compare car insurance rates today by requesting free car insurance quotes?just enter your zip code to get started now!

ChoicePoint sells CLUE reports to home and car insurance companies. A separate CLUE score is generated for car and home insurance. The CLUE report doesn?t determine whether you?re eligible for car insurance coverage, although the information in the report can affect the cost of your car insurance rates.

The company combines insurance claims information along with your credit history. Contact ChoicePoint if you?d like a copy of your CLUE report at: CLUE, Inc., Attention: FACT ACT Request, P.O. Box 105295, Atlanta, GA 30348. The report costs $12.95. Call the company for more information at 1-888-497-0011.

Contents of the CLUE Report

Insurance companies report details of past car insurance claims to ChoicePoint. Inquiries concerning car insurance coverage are also reported to the company. Questions you?ve directed to a current or former insurer concerning claims may appear in the report, regardless of whether you presented the claims for payment. These queries appear as claims ?without payment.?

When you apply for insurance through a new provider, your new insurer is able to review the information about past insurance claims from the ChoicePoint information database. Claims filed more than five years ago aren?t included in the CLUE database, although inquiries (even those considered claims without payment) are indefinitely retained.

Depending upon your state?s insurance laws, ChoicePoint?s practice of keeping some of this information may be prohibited. Contact your state?s Department of Insurance.

CLUE Report Scores

Like your credit report score from any of the three major credit reporting organizations, a higher CLUE score is desirable. The highest possible CLUE score is 997. Scores of 776 to 997 are considered ?good.? Scores of 626 to 775 are considered ?average.? Scores of 501 to 625 are considered ?below average.? A score of 500 or less is considered ?undesirable.?

Federal credit laws determine how long information remains in your CLUE report. If your insurance company initiates collections or you miss a premium payment, that information remains in the file for about seven years. If you declare bankruptcy, the information remains on file for ten years. Tax liens (unpaid) remain in the file for 15 years. When an insurance company or other entity requests information about you, the information remains on file in the CLUE report for up to five years.

CLUE Reports and Credit Scores

Your FICO credit score, as calculated and reported by the three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian) aren?t the same as your CLUE report score. Your credit score may be included in the CLUE report. The CLUE focuses on your car insurance claims history.

Insurers use the information contained in your CLUE report to discern your level of financial stability. If you?ve filed many car insurance claims in a period of a few years, a car insurance company may offer to insure you at higher insurance rates or even deny you car insurance coverage.

Potential creditors use a credit score to determine how likely you are to repay the principal and interest on a revolving credit or loan account. Credit score helps prospective lenders to price debt. Higher credit scores earn consumers the benefit of lower loan rates.

Car insurance companies also use credit scores to determine financial stability and responsibility. According to ongoing research performed by the insurance industry, people with good credit may have fewer car insurance claims. That?s why people with good to excellent FICO credit scores (from about 625 to 850) may benefit from lower car insurance rates.

CLUE Report and Credit Report Errors

Information collected by ChoicePoint and the three major credit reporting bureaus may contain errors. If you receive notice of a denial of car insurance coverage, request your CLUE report and credit reports to check for errors. If you plan to apply for car insurance in the next few months, order a copy of your CLUE report and credit reports first. Notify ChoicePoint and the three credit reporting organizations of any errors in writing.

ChoicePoint will seek to check the information in your CLUE report within 30 days. Similarly, TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax must attempt to verify information collected within 30 days or remove the information from your file. Submitting a personal statement to the CLUE file or the credit reporting agencies can help to clarify the information for users, including car insurance companies.

8 killed in bombing on UN building in Nigeria (AP)

ABUJA, Nigeria ? A car laden with explosives rammed through two gates and blew up at the United Nations' offices in Nigeria's capital Friday, killing at least eight people and shattering part of the concrete structure.

The brazen attack, carried out as the U.N. offices teemed with staff, comes as Africa's most populous nation faces the growing threat of both homegrown and international terrorism. Militants from a radical Muslim sect from northeast Nigeria have carried out attacks in the country's capital, though never on a foreign target. The country's oil-rich Niger Delta in the south has also spawned a violent militant group.

Witnesses told The Associated Press that a sedan rammed through two separate gates at the U.N. compound as guards tried to stop the vehicle. The suicide bomber inside crashed the car into the main reception area and detonated the explosives, inflicting the most damage possible, a spokesman for the Nigerian National Emergency Management Agency said.

"I saw scattered bodies," said Michael Ofilaje, a UNICEF worker at the building, which he said shook with the explosion. "Many people are dead."

The building houses about 400 employees of the U.N. in Nigeria, including the majority of its offices. A local U.N. spokesman declined to comment, but a local hospital administrator told the AP it had treated as many as 40 victims so far, with more people coming in.

Eight bodies of victims were brought to the morgue of the nearby National Hospital, spokesman Payo Hastrup said. Local television stations broadcast pleas for blood donation. Officials tried to account for everyone inside the building at the time of the explosion.

"We believe there are many casualties but at this point we don't know what the level of casualties is," U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said in New York. "We condemn all terror attacks regardless of motivation."

The building, located in the same neighborhood as the U.S. embassy and other diplomatic posts in Abuja, houses offices of a number of U.N. agencies including the U.N. Development Program, UNICEF and the U.N. Population Fund.

The explosion punched a huge hole in the building. Workers brought three large cranes to the site within hours of the attack, trying to pull away the concrete and rubble to find survivors. Others at the site stood around, stunned, as medical workers began carrying out what appeared to be the dead.

"This is getting out of hand," said a U.N. staffer who identified himself as Bodunrin. "If they can get into the U.N. House, they can reach anywhere."

Ali Tikko, who was in a building 100 yards (meters) from the site of the blast when it occurred said, "I heard one big boom."

"I see a number of people lying on the floor ? at least four or five. I cannot see if they are dead. There are a lot of security around," Tikko said by telephone.

Local police spokesman Jimoh Moshood said police are investigating. Reuben Abati, a spokesman for President Goodluck Jonathan, said the presidency would later issue a statement on the attack.

No one immediately claimed responsibility. Oil-rich Nigeria faces terrorism threats on multiple fronts.

Nigeria, a nation of 150 million, is split between a largely Christian south and Muslim north. In recent months, the country has faced an increasing threat from a radical Muslim sect called Boko Haram, which wants to implement a strict version of Shariah law in the nation. The sect has carried out assassinations and bombings, including the June car bombing in Abuja of the national headquarters of Nigeria's federal police that killed at least two people.

Earlier this month, the commander for U.S. military operations in Africa said Boko Haram may be trying to link with two al-Qaida-linked groups in other African countries to mount joint attacks in Nigeria.

Gen. Carter Ham told AP on Aug. 17 during a visit to Nigeria that "multiple sources" indicate Boko Haram made contacts with al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, which operates in northwest Africa, and with al-Shabab in Somalia.

"I think it would be the most dangerous thing to happen not only to the Africans, but to us as well," Carter said.

Last year, a militant group from the country's oil patch, the Niger Delta, blew up car bombs in the capital during Nigeria's 50th independence anniversary ceremony, killing at least 12. The militant group did not immediately respond to an AP request for comment Friday.

Generations Federal Credit Union Wins State Youth Financial ...

San Antonio, Texas (PRWEB) August 21, 2011

Generations Federal Credit Union has been named as the recipient of the 2011 Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award for the State of Texas. This is the ninth year that the Texas Credit Union League has presented the award, recognizing a credit union for its efforts to provide innovative financial education to youth within the community. Generations was recognized for its No Suckers Here program which is designed to convey the importance of being prepared to deal with personal financial matters.

The financial education of our children is one of the most important initiatives that a credit union can undertake. These programs reach out and guide students as they begin down the path to financial independence, said Generations CEO Tim F. Haegelin. To be recognized by our peers for something that we feel is truly valuable is a tremendous honor.

The No Suckers Here program works with high schools, colleges and universities across Bexar County. Generations meets with school administrators to determine the specific needs of their student body and then tailors a program designed to fit those needs.

Casino attack in Mexico's Monterrey kills 53 (Reuters)

MONTERREY, Mexico (Reuters) ? Masked gunmen killed at least 53 people at a casino in northern Mexico on Thursday, leaving it ablaze with patrons trapped inside in one of the worst attacks in a major Mexican city in years.

Analysts and officials said the brazen assault had all the hallmarks of drug cartels that have plunged Monterrey and other parts of Mexico into a spiral of violence.

A survivor said the armed men burst into the Casino Royale in the prosperous industrial city of Monterrey on Thursday afternoon and threatened gamblers before spraying gasoline on the carpets and setting it on fire.

"My wife came here for a celebration," a weeping man told Milenio TV. "She was having dinner with her friends."

One witness said people stampeded after hearing blasts soon after the attack began. Many patrons ran to hide in the toilets but died from asphyxiation as smoke engulfed the building, a rescue official said.

Rodrigo Medina, governor of Nuevo Leon state, told the Televisa network that 53 people were killed and rescue teams warned the death toll could rise. Media reports said the majority of those killed were women.

Monterrey, 230 km (140 miles) from the Texas border, is a relatively wealthy city of about 4 million people and was for years seen as a model of economic development. But lawlessness has taken its toll as Mexico's drug war has escalated.

President Felipe Calderon called the attack a "barbaric act of terror" and vowed to keep fighting organized crime.

About 42,000 people have been killed in the drug war across Mexico since Calderon took office in late 2006 and deployed troops against the drug cartels.

Alberto Islas, a security expert at consultancy Risk Evaluation, said Thursday's carnage showed Calderon's strategy had failed to curb the power of the cartels.

"The impunity and lack of investigation were the most obvious incentives for the criminals to carry out this act of violence," Islas said. "At the end of the day, they know nothing will be done about it."

CHAOTIC SCENES

Rival drug gangs are fighting for control of Monterrey and routinely extort casinos and other businesses, threatening attacks if the owners refuse to pay.

Televisa said up to 20 more bodies still might be trapped in the debris of the casino. Paramedics and firefighters pulled out bodies covered with plastic bags from a hole in the wall as night fell.

Relatives of people trapped in the casino lined up to demand information while others used social media to start their own searches.

"My sister was working inside as a waitress," said one man. "I know nothing about her. There is only confusion."

National security spokesman Alejandro Poire said the government would do everything in its power to stop the violence and capture those responsible for the casino attack.

Rescuers used an excavator from a nearby construction site to break through a casino wall to search for victims.

Twitter users in Monterrey reported scenes of chaos on the streets around the Casino Royale after the attack and heavy army presence.

Casinos have become popular in Mexico and a number of them have been attacked in recent years. The Milenio newspaper said on Thursday a casino in the state of Coahuila was attacked by a group of armed men.

Austrian probed for abusing daughters for 41 yrs (AP)

VIENNA, Austria ? An 80-year-old man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of sexually abusing his two mentally disabled daughters for 41 years, and beating and threatening them to keep them subservient.

Alois Lissl, a senior state police official, said the father ? from the Upper Austrian village of St. Peter am Hart ? is suspected of assault, torture or neglect of defenseless individuals, threat to life or physical condition, rape and other sex crimes. The man had been at liberty and living in a senior citizens' home.

Lissl said the man will be questioned by an investigative judge within the next 48 hours, who will decide whether to keep him confined.

Police said the man's daughters ? now 53 and 45 years old ? have accused him of repeatedly raping them at their home between 1970 and May 2011. The women said their father frequently warned he would kill them if they resisted, occasionally threatening them with firearms, said Lissl. They also said that their mother, who died several years ago, was also repeatedly abused by the suspect.

The father has denied the accusations, said local police commander Martin Pumberger. Police have not named him or the alleged victims.

Police and local media had originally said the suspect had kept the victims locked in a small room for 41 years, but later revised that version, suggesting they had limited freedom of movement.

"They were seen in and around the house," Pumberger told state broadcaster ORF. "But the daughters were prohibited from any and all social contact."

Pumberger said that the women's accusations "are believable," adding that they "are relieved that they were able to speak about their decades-long martyrdom."

The Oberoesterreichische Nachrichten newspaper reported that the women escaped from their father's custody when he fell and was unable to get up after the older daughter pushed him during the last attempted rape. It said the victims were also beaten with a stick and a pitchfork.

It was unclear why it took for so long for the allegations to become public.

Police were initially quoted as saying the daughters did not tell anyone about the alleged abuse until weeks after their escape. But authorities later said that a social worker who discovered the father two days after he fell went to police shortly after with her suspicions. The man was moved to the senior citizens' home after he was found.

The allegations evoke chilling parallels to the case of Austrian Josef Fritzl, who imprisoned his daughter in a windowless cellar for 24 years and repeatedly raped her, fathering her seven children. Fritzl was sentenced to life imprisonment two years ago for that crime and for responsibility in the death of one of the children.

"Hound Dog" songwriter Jerry Leiber dies at 78 (omg!)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Celebrated lyricist Jerry Leiber, who partnered with composer Mike Stoller to write such iconic hits as "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock" and played a key role in the birth of rock 'n' roll, died on Monday at age 78.

Leiber died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles of cardiopulmonary failure, said Randy Poe, president of his publishing company. Family members of the legendary songwriter were with him when he died, according to Leiber's assistant, Marilyn Levy.

Launching their collaboration as teenagers in the early 1950s, Leiber and Stoller went on to pen more than 200 tunes covered by such recording stars as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, James Brown, B.B. King, the Drifters and Peggy Lee. Presley alone recorded over 20 Leiber and Stoller songs.

Leiber jokingly referred to their six-decade partnership, chronicled in the 2009 memoir "Hound Dog: The Leiber & Stoller Autobiography," as "the longest-running argument in show business."

"He was my friend, my buddy, my writing partner for 61 years," Stoller, 78, said in a statement released by their publicist. "He had a way with words. There was nobody better. I'm going to miss him."

Their songwriting credits included such rock 'n' roll classics as "Hound Dog," "Jailhouse Rock," "Kansas City," "Poison Ivy" and the hit "Stand By Me," which they co-wrote with singer Ben E. King.

Their big breakthrough, "Hound Dog," originally topped the "race" music charts as a rhythm and blues single by Willie Mae "Big Mamma" Thornton in 1953, three years before Presley turned a somewhat sanitized version into a rock 'n' roll classic.

The crossover success of "Hound Dog" and other songs they wrote and produced helped pave the way for a whole body of R&B music, initially performed by black stars and embraced by African American listeners, to gain popularity with broader audiences, much of it reinterpreted by white artists.

Those early hits also caught the attention of the landmark label Atlantic Records, which signed the pair to one of the recording industry's first independent production deals in 1955.

MET AS TEENS

Leiber was the lyricist in the duo, displaying his spicy wit on many songs, while Stoller composed the tunes. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 for their role as pioneers of the musical genre they helped popularize.

In addition to their formative influence on Presley, they helped ignite the career of the Coasters by writing and producing playful hits for the doo-wop act, including "Yakety Yak," "Charlie Brown" and "Along Came Jones."

Leiber, the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland, was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, and moved with his family as a teenager to Los Angeles, where he met Stoller, also an East Coast native, in 1950 when they were both 17.

"When they wrote hound dog for 'Big Mama' Thornton, they had to have their contract co-signed by their parents," said longtime publicist, Bobbi Marcus.

The song came together when Leiber started beating a rhythm on the roof of Stoller's 1937 Plymouth with his right hand and tapped on the dashboard with his left.

"I kinda liked the beat and it felt good," Leiber later told Reuters. "I started yelling, 'You ain't nothing but a hound dog!' Mike said, 'I like that.'"

Leiber and Stoller could work quickly when they had to.

In a single day, they composed four songs that ended up on the soundtrack to the 1957 Presley movie "Jailhouse Rock" -- the title track, its B-side single "Treat Me Nice," "I Want to be Free" and "(You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care."

"They wrote that in one afternoon under pressure from a (music) publisher who blocked their door with a sofa and laid on it until they gave him the music," Marcus said.

Aside from rock music, they also composed songs in other genres such as cabaret and jazz, working with the likes of crooner Frank Sinatra and the French songstress Edith Piaf, according to the website for their music publishing company.

Leiber is survived by his sons Jed, Oliver and Jake, said Levy, his assistant.

A new University of Colorado Boulder study indicates a major climate oscillation in the Southern Hemisphere that is expected to intensify in the coming decades will likely cause increased wildfire activity in the southern half of South America.

The research team used tree rings dating to 1506 to track past wildfire activity in the forests of Patagonia tied to the Southern Annular Mode, or SAM, a climate oscillation that creates low atmospheric pressure in the Antarctic that is tied to warmer and drier conditions in southern South America. The tree rings showed that when SAM was in its positive phase, there were widespread fires in both dry woodlands and rainforests in Patagonia, a region that straddles Argentina and Chile, said CU-Boulder Research Associate Andres Holz, lead study author.

"Our study shows for about the past 250 years, the Southern Annular Mode has been the main driver in creating droughts and fires in two very different ecosystems in southern South America," said Holz. "Climate models suggest an increase in SAM beginning in the 1960s due to greenhouse gas increases and Antarctic ozone depletion probably will cause this region to be drought-prone and fire-prone for at least the next 100 years."

A paper on the subject by Holz and CU-Boulder geography Professor Thomas Veblen was published in Geophysical Research Letters.

Holz and Veblen compared past wildfire records for two ecologically distinct regions in Patagonia -- the relatively dry region of southern Patagonia in Argentina and the temperate rainforest of Patagonia in northern Chile. While the tree ring historical record showed increased fires in both regions correlated with a positive SAM, the trend has been less pronounced in northern Patagonia in the past 50 years, likely because of fire-suppression efforts there, Holz said.

But the decades of fire suppression have caused the northern Patagonian woodlands to become denser and more prone towildfire during hot and dry years, Holz said.

"Even in areas of northern Patagonia where fire suppression previously had been effective, record surface areas of woodlands and forests have burned in recent years of extreme drought," said Veblen. "And since this is in an area of rapid residential growth into wildland-urban interface areas, this climate-driven trend towards increasing fire risk is becoming a major problem for land managers and homeowners."

The two CU-Boulder researchers studied reconstructions of tree rings going back more than 500 years from 432 trees at 42 sample sites in northern Argentina and southern Chile -- the largest available data set of annual, readable tree ring records in the Southern Hemisphere. The tree rings, which indicate climate cycles and reveal the scars of old fires, showed that wildfires generally increased in both regions when SAM was in its strong, positive phase.

Although the Antarctic ozone hole stopped growing in about 2000 as a result of a ban on ozone-depleting gases and now appears to be slowly repairing itself, a 2011 paper by researchers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder indicates ozone recovery and greenhouse gas influences essentially will cancel each other out, preventing SAM from returning to its pre-1960s levels.

"Before the Industrial Revolution, SAM intensified naturally at times to create drought situations in Patagonia," Holz said. "But in the last 80 years or so, the natural variation has been overwhelmed by a bias toward a positive SAM phase because of ozone-depleting chemicals and greenhouse gases we have put in the atmosphere."

The research effort was supported by the National Geographic Society, the National Science Foundation, the CU Beverly Sears Small Grants Program and the Council on Research and CreativeResearch of the CU Graduate School.

"As warming and drying trends continue, it is likely that wildfire activity will increase even in woodland areas where fire suppression has previously been effective," Holz and Veblen wrote in Geophysical Research Letters.

Steps Outlined to Screen All Newborns for Heart Defects (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Aug. 22 (HealthDay News) -- Acting on 2010 U.S. Health and Human Services recommendations, a panel of pediatric and cardiac experts has outlined a strategy for routine screening of newborns to improve detection of congenital heart disease.

By measuring oxygen levels in newborns' blood before hospital discharge, doctors would be better able to identify the potentially lethal but often treatable heart condition, the experts said.

New Jersey will start screening for congenital heart disease (CHD) on Aug. 31 using a noninvasive test, called pulse oximetry.

"One percent of all newborns have congenital heart disease, and about one quarter have critical heart defects which require early intervention," explained study lead author Dr. Alex R. Kemper, an associate professor of pediatrics at Duke University in Durham, N.C. "And if they're not picked up in a timely way then the baby can even die."

The challenge, Kemper said, is that in the hospital nursery these children look like every other child. "It's hard to identify them. And that is also true even when women get mid-pregnancy ultrasounds. Some cases are picked up. But it can be very easy to miss a baby with a life-threatening congenital heart situation," he explained.

Congenital heart disease causes more deaths before age 1 year than any other birth defect. Universal screening would help identify defects early and improve survival rates, experts said.

As envisioned by Health and Human Services, screening will be instituted at the discretion of individual states, rather than federally mandated.

The new strategy, outlined online Aug. 22 in Pediatrics, addresses the development of national standards, implementation and follow-up procedures. The guidelines came out of a working group that met in January and included representatives from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Cardiology Foundation and the American Heart Association in conjunction with the HHS Secretary's Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children.

Noting that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is establishing standards for the machines that do pulse oximetry screenings, the working group recommended that CHD screenings use only those machines that conform to FDA standards when established.

To reduce the risk of false positive results on the first day of life, screening should be done on day two, the experts said. And the right hand and one foot (simultaneously or one after the other) should be the target test sites.

The committee also set optimal screening thresholds based on recent research from Sweden and England, which aim to reduce the risk for missing CHD or triggering a false positive.

To minimize stress on the child and family, facilities also should draft clear follow-up plans to ensure the swift and orderly handling of all babies who test positive for CHD, the group said.

"This is pretty good news," said Kemper. "But clearly there are still issues that need to be clarified before most hospitals would start doing this. The first is that if the screening picks up indications of a heart defect then the next step is the baby will need to get an echocardiogram, which is a scan of the heart. And a lot of hospitals just don't have that equipment. So some babies will need to be transferred to other hospitals for that."

Also, "we need to mitigate against the risk for false positives by having an effective algorithm in place to ensure that we're limiting the risk for incorrectly identifying defects," he added.

Dr. Alan R. Fleischman, medical director for the March of Dimes Foundation in White Plains, N.Y., and a working group participant, expressed enthusiasm for the screening guidelines.

"The seven specific types of heart disease this screening looks for account for somewhere around just a quarter of all congenital heart disease," Fleischman said. "But these types present with devastating symptoms in the first days to weeks of life, and are often not picked up until the child is critically ill."

This simple, noninvasive test has the potential to pick up these children before they have symptoms and get them immediate medical or surgical intervention, he added. "This is a very important diagnostic advance."

1985: Interior Design | As they saw it

&nbsp

The interior design business had reason to cheer and reason to worry in 1985. On the positive side, interiors have taken on a heightened significance as a means of expression, both in the corporate world and at home. Industry-wide sales were good. An industry study reported that total dollar volume for the industry was $37.5 billion, $30 billion in the contract or nonresidential segment, while the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers? Association estimated that the annual shipment of office furniture would reach $6.6 billion, a healthy increase of 14 percent over 1984. The only note of hesitation to enter the picture for interior designers was the sobering scenario offered recently by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), which said that of all the buildings projected to be in place by the year 2000, 90 percent have already been built. In other words, the focus of work will undergo a change: there will be a shift toward renovation and design of existing structures, and this will increasingly bring interior designers into direct competition with architects for these projects.

Changes in the Home and on the Job.

Residential and corporate venues continue to be the favored commissions for contemporary designers. In the home, the influence of fashion and architecture is being seen as never before. Colors tend to reflect recent fashion trends, and the still increasing popularity of architect-designed furniture and accessories further entwines the disciplines of interior design and architecture. Meanwhile, the recent growth of white collar employment and the advance of electronic technology?which requires new concepts of work surfaces and seating, wire management, and lighting and new attention to other task-specific factors?has seen a total restructuring of the office landscape.

This in turn has affected leading design firms. Steelcase Inc., the largest manufacturer of office furniture, with sales in excess of $1 billion, reported that nearly half of its sales are in systems; that segment alone provides Steelcase with more in sales than the total sales of its closest competitor, the high-end Herman Miller Inc. Knoll International, another design leader, with a 40-year reputation for classic pieces by modern masters such as Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, and Eero Saarinen and contemporary ?name? architects such as Richard Meier and Robert Venturi, now plans to focus on systems furniture. Knoll?which became a public corporation in late 1983-will supplement its Stephens and Zapf lines with its Bruce Hannah line in 1985 and Andrew Morrison line in 1986.

The Growth of Showrooms.

The development of the furniture industry as an important and fast-growing business was further demonstrated by the opening of a number of showroom design centers. The year saw the opening of the Houston Design Center, the Denver Design Center, and the Dallas Infomart (exclusively for computers and computer support equipment), while the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles announced plans for expansion. Expected to open late in the year was the Boston Design Center. The International Design Center, New York, opened in October. The Contract Design Center in the Dallas Decorative Center District announced that it would open in late 1986 or early 1987.

All this activity puts pressure on the manufacturers who lease space in these vast wholesale emporiums to commission showrooms that will accurately and dramatically reflect the company?s image. Quality, efficiency, and sales appeal are what the companies want to convey; the outstanding example of design for this purpose in 1985 was unquestionably the Steelcase showroom in the Pacific Design Center, designed by Orlando Diaz-Azcuy of Gensler and Associates. A shimmering all white ?envelope? arranged on a diagonal grid, the installation sends out an image of eminence and leadership while demonstrating the functional excellence of Steelcase products. Diaz-Azcuy?s clean-cut exposition also reverses the trend of postmodern decorative symbolism established by the architect Michael Graves; first introduced to much acclaim in Sunar showrooms nationwide beginning in 1979, this style is now being criticized as overwhelming the product itself.

Architects Versus Designers.

With the tapering off of new construction apparent even to the layperson?who can easily notice the amount of renovation, retrofit, historic preservation, and adaptive reuse of buildings being done in every city?architects are increasingly confronted with substantial projects that call for expertise in interior design disciplines, something they are swiftly attaining. Consequently, interior design firms have come to find themselves threatened by the intrusion of architects onto turf long regarded as secure. In reaction, the American Society of Interior Designers has proposed a system of registration that would reserve the right to practice interior design to those licensed to do so. Naturally, the AIA has not taken this strategic move lightly, and the battle lines became drawn by the two factions. A middle course advocated by some observers of the impasse is the resumption of multidisciplined practice by generalist practitioners, as was the tradition prior to the post-World War II construction boom. Indeed, many firms are already equipped to offer comprehensive services, including interior design, product design, and graphic design, as well as those considered strictly architectural, such as feasibility studies, programming, site supervision, and the creation of actual design and construction documents. Though the outcome of the controversy is still unresolved, its existence is evidence of the emerging significance of the interior space and its furnishing.

Design People.

Angelo Donghia, one of the most influential interior designers in the United States, died in April. He was 50 years old. Donghia?s eclectic approach, featuring bold, clean lines and unusual combinations of textures and patterns, brought him a diverse, admiring following. He was sought out by major corporations (he decorated Pepsico?s world headquarters in Purchase, N.Y.) and celebrities (such as the fashion designers Halston and Ralph Lauren, singer Diana Ross, and real estate developer Donald Trump), while to the general public he was best known for the mass-produced furniture, fabrics, sheets, china, and glassware that carried his name.

Another designer was given a type of belated ?coming out? party. Charlotte Perriand?who from 1927 to 1937 was an associate of the famed architect Le Corbusier but who many feel was never accorded a suitable amount of acclaim?was given, at the age of 82, a retrospective at the Mus?e des Arts D?coratifs in her native Paris. In addition to her work with Le Corbusier and other artists of that era, Perriand worked in Japan and South America, exploring the possibilities for adapting designs from one country to another.
