Abstract: A series of novel 1-(4-substitutedbenzoyl)-4-(4-chlorobenzhydryl)piperazine derivatives 5a?g was designed by a nucleophilic substitution reaction of 1-(4-chlorobenzhydryl)piperazine with various benzoyl chlorides and characterized by elemental analyses, IR and ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. Cytotoxicity of the compounds was demonstrated on cancer cell lines from liver (HUH7, FOCUS, MAHLAVU, HEPG2, HEP3B), breast (MCF7, BT20, T47D, CAMA-1), colon (HCT-116), gastric (KATO-3) and endometrial (MFE-296) cancer cell lines. Time-dependent cytotoxicity analysis of compound 5a indicated the long-term in situ stability of this compound. All compounds showed significant cell growth inhibitory activity on the selected cancer cell lines.

Government-helmed China Movie Channel's site M1905 announced this week that it's joining forces with Jiaflix -- a consortium comprised of Hollywood-types like former Columbia exec Sid Ganis -- to launch a movie streaming service in China. The still unnamed offering is set to stream both Chinese and international films, including a deal struck with Paramount that will bring the studio's back catalog and future releases to the service. The fruits of the partnership are set to launch in the fourth quarter of this year, bringing streaming to a number of platforms, including smartphone and tablets. Jiaflix and China Movie Channel added that they'll have a plan in place to combat potential piracy through the service, but have yet to spell out what such a plan of action would entail.

Investors seek US debt on EU summit pessimism: EPFR

NEW YORK (Reuters) - In advance of the latest round of European talks to help stabilize the euro zone financial situation, investors once again played it safe, data from EPFR Global showed on Friday.

The fund-tracking firm reported that U.S. bond funds took in $3.26 billion in the week ended June 27. More significantly, U.S. stock funds saw redemptions of $7.64 billion, with about 80 percent of that being pulled from three exchange-traded funds.

Bond funds globally saw inflows of $4.74 billion over the week, while equity funds saw outflows of $7.69 billion.

Money market funds globally attracted $1.09 billion in inflows, marking a reversal from the prior week when $33.43 billion was pulled from those funds.

Brian LaRose, technical analyst with United-ICAP, said the move by investors out of stocks and into bonds last week "speaks volumes about how much progress the public thinks the euro zone officials are able to make."

That said, stocks in the U.S. rallied strongly on Friday, after euro zone leaders agreed to cut borrowing costs in Spain and Italy and allow rescue funds to be used to stabilize the region's banks. In early afternoon trading, the S&P 500 was up 2.13 percent.

LaRose, however, said he wasn't impressed by the Friday rally because he thinks the European debt crisis cannot be easily solved.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? "We need answers on this. Not defensive BS. Real answers."

In email exchanges with subordinates in February and March 2011, Attorney General Eric Holder and the department's second-highest official expressed growing concern that something might have gone wrong in a federal gun-smuggling probe called Operation Fast and Furious.

Two of Holder's emails and one by Deputy Attorney General James Cole were among documents the Justice Department showed Tuesday to Republican and Democratic staffers of the House Oversight and Government Affairs Committee in an effort to ward off a criminal contempt vote against the attorney general.

The full contents of the emails were described to The Associated Press by two people who have seen them. Both people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about them publicly.

For the past year and a half, some Republicans have promoted the idea that Holder and other top-level officials at the Justice Department knew federal agents in Operation Fast and Furious had engaged in a risky tactic known as "gun-walking."

Two of Holder's emails and one from Cole appear to show that they hadn't known about gun-walking but were determined to find out whether the allegations were true.

When relying on the technique of gun-walking, federal agents tried to track suspected illicit gun-buyers instead of arresting them. The hope was that the low-level "straw" purchasers would lead law enforcement to major arms-traffickers, enabling the agents to dismantle networks that had put tens of thousands of guns into the hands of Mexican drug cartels. In Operation Fast and Furious, the tracking effort failed. The operation identified over 2,000 illicitly purchased weapons. Some 1,400 of them have yet to be recovered.

The emails by Holder and Cole followed a hurried assurance by the Justice Department on Feb. 4, 2011, to Sen. Chuck Grassley, the senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee. No such tactic was used, the Justice Department said in a letter to Grassley. The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives "makes every effort to interdict weapons that have been purchased illegally and prevent their transportation to Mexico," the letter added. The letter was based on incorrect assurances supplied to the Justice Department by the U.S. Attorney's office in Phoenix and by ATF officials. The department withdrew the Feb. 4 letter on Dec. 2, 2011, after documenting what had taken place not only in Operation Fast and Furious, but in three other gun-walking operations going back to 2006.

At the Justice Department on Thursday, spokeswoman Nanda Chitre declined to comment about the e-mails.

After the Feb. 4 letter to Grassley, news stories appeared containing allegations of gun-walking. The Justice Department was awash in conflicting opinions over whether the media accounts were correct.

CBS News ran a story on Feb. 23, 2011. On March 3, CBS followed up, and the nonprofit Center for Public Integrity weighed in with its own online account.

On Feb. 23, aides passed along to the attorney general the CBS story alleging gun-walking, and the attorney general shot back, "We need answers on this. Not defensive BS. Real answers."

Five days later, Holder asked the Justice Department's inspector general to investigate.

On March 3, Cole, the No. 2 official at the Justice Department, emailed his staff: "We obviously need to get to the bottom of this."

Holder was skeptical of any assurances.

"I hope the AG understands that we did not allow guns to walk," an official at the ATF's Washington headquarters said on March 10 in an email that Holder's aides forwarded to the attorney general.

In a response, Holder wrote, "Do they really, really know" that there was no gun-walking?

A day earlier, at Holder's instruction, the Justice Department had sent out a directive to the field reinforcing a longtime Justice Department policy against gun-walking. The directive said that agents must not allow guns to cross the border into Mexico.

Former Chief Legal Officer Charged

A Mason attorney who served as the chief legal officer for Fujitec America, Inc. is now facing legal troubles of his own.

A Warren County grand jury Friday indicted Darren Courtney, 48, for allegedly stealing more than $180,000 from his employer.

Prosecutors say that Courtney took the cash from the Mason-based company between 2010 and February of this year.? He then altered company records to conceal the crime, according to the indictment.

Courtney, who now runs his own law firm, served as chief legal and administrative officer for Fujitec America, according to a company profile on Fujitec?s website. He had been with the company for 13 years.

The company manufactures and supplies elevators, escalators and moving walkway systems.

As part of his job duties, Courtney was responsible for resolving claims, or lawsuits, against Fujitec, said Warren County Prosecutor David Fornshell.

Courtney allegedly ?created? claims from around the country and would then have Fujitec issue checks to law firms purportedly representing the claimants in efforts to settle those claims.

Neither the claims nor the law firms actually existed, said Fornshell.

Instead, Courtney is accused of opening up accounts with local banks in the names of the phony law firms and cashing more than $150,000 in settlement checks he instructed Fujitec to issue.

He is also charged with creating fraudulent expenses of more than $30,000 and charging those to the company.

Courtney has been charged with two counts of theft, telecommunications fraud and tampering with records, all felonies of the third degree. He faces up to 36 months in prison on each of the four charges.

The two biggest stories of the offseason could have a common thread slightly thicker than the fact that both involve the Saints.

While there?s no obvious link between the bounty suspensions and the fact that quarterback Drew Brees still doesn?t have a contract, there?s a belief that Brees and former Saints linebacker Scott Fujita are experiencing retaliation for their roles in last year?s CBA talks.

As to Brees, Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com reports that the NFLPA recently has asked Commissioner Roger Goodell to explore whether the Saints are acting in good faith with respect to the Brees contract talks.? Per La Canfora, some within the union believe Brees? efforts last year in connection with the labor deal ?might be held against him.?? The union reportedly will file unfair labor practice charges, if the NFL does not investigate the situation.

As to Fujita, Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com speculates that the NFL?s inclusion of the Browns linebacker within the quartet of suspended players may reflect payback for Fujita?s ?outspoken? efforts in 2011, which included expressing concern about an 18-game regular season.? ?Fujita also questioned the league?s laxity in linking concussion injuries to long-term health effects,? Grossi writes.? ?In union meetings at which Goodell was present, Fujita was known for putting Goodell on spot with direct questions and refutations.?

It would be tough to prove bias based on their roles in the CBA talks, absent a smoking-gun admission from a league or team executive.? But merely pushing the issue could give the players an extra bit of leverage.

La Canfora reports that the NFLPA also is ?closely monitoring? the lack of negotiations with the Saints draft picks, a contention that seems ludicrous on its face.? For starters, the Saints have a small class, with no first-round or second-round pick.? Also, in past years few draft picks had been signed at this point in the offseason, and no one ever said ?boo? about it.? If the Saints rookies didn?t like the fact that the team wasn?t negotiating with them, the Saints rookies should have boycotted the offseason program.

Besides, why would the Saints gratuitously alienate their newest players?

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of this specific situation comes from the lengths to which the NFLPA seems to be going to insulate Brees from any blame.

?The NFLPA opted to pursue this matter with Goodell on its own, and was not probed by Brees,? La Canfora said.? ?The quarterback did not play a role in the decision, sources said, with the union moving forward of its own accord.? NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith would not discuss the specifics of the matter but said the union was acting as it would to protect any member and that Brees did not have a say in any of the actions the union might take.?

Baloney, we say.

For starters, a union typically doesn?t push an issue that the affected player doesn?t want to push.? When it comes to Brees, who remains a member of the NFLPA?s Executive Committee, there?s no way union leadership would take action against his wishes, since he is part of union leadership.

So, yes, Brees looks to be behind this one.? And that?s fine; if he?s a victim of retaliation for his role in the labor talks, he has every right to seek relief.

But he also should be willing to acknowledge it.

Head of mobile strategy Ryu Chienhao claims that ZTE plans on selling 35 million smartphones this year, with hopes to become the number 3 smartphone and mobile phone vendor in the world by 2015. Last year, the company shipped 15 million smartphones with a heavy focus on Asia. To reach 35 million, ZTE will not only need to expand outside of China but also build more premium products to compete in the U.S. mobile landscape. The forthcoming "Grand" series should help with that, though the recently announced Grand X LTE is only headed to Europe and Asia Pacific.

Agricultural Consultations: Much Ado? and ... - Business Barbados

Apologies to William Shakespeare for the corruption of the title of his play, but the term used above is typical of what we continue to see in the agricultural sector.? I cannot count the studies that have been done on local? agriculture and which have achieved nothing. How many National Agricultural Consultations have we had over the years? ?What has been achieved as a result ? ?Nothing, as far as I am concerned.

How many interventions have been made in the annual Financial Statements and Budgetary Proposals which have remained just that- proposals. For example:

1. In 2006: A pilot project at Home Agricultural Station as? a site for research, production and training in agricultural practices ?? never came to pass.
2. BADMC to be the sole importer of the 14 commodities ?in which the country has a capability to achieve self-sufficiency- not that I think BADMC has the capability to do this , but they should control the import permits for these products? based on accurate production information
3. In 2007: establishment of a committee to promote the use of Barbadian foods in hotels and guarantee farmers a market for their produce. If it indeed exists, it certainly isn?t working
4. A government funded private sector managed state of the art central processing facility to address the challenges of the condiments? industry ? never came to pass
5. $20M to be provided to Ministry of Agriculture to upgrade their eight laboratories- has any work started? While this and other aspects of that project continue to creep at a snail?s pace, agro-processors have to refuse export contracts
6. Broadening of the Agricultural Payment Guarantee Fund? to cover the payments to farmers who take part in the programme to supply hotels and importers ? I am not aware that this ever got off the ground
7. $3M to BAMC to continue pre- investment activities during the transitional period in which the sugar industry will be? restructured. No significant progress has been made and the industry is on its knees
8. In 2008: Focus of sugar industry to change? from producing sugar for export to producing electricity for local use and molasses for the rum export industry ? no progress.
9. The law relating to praedial larceny will be amended to make it easier to obtain conviction -? no progress
10. Renewed efforts to successfully develop? through joint venture arrangements with a select number of investors, the Sea Island Cotton industry into a major component of the agricultural, sector- far from developing, the industry has almost disappeared and the cotton variety has been compromised.

We have just completed yet another National Agricultural Consultation. Most ?industry players consider these sessions a waste of time. Comments were also made regarding the strange format of the Consultation which one would think was intended to identify problems in the sector and discuss possible solutions. However, after starting late, which has become the norm in this part of the world, half the day? was taken up with officialdom, hearing what has been heard so many times before from various organisations and we heard of yet another study which is ?being conducted on agriculture in general? and one on the Sea Island Cotton industry.

The result was that the useful part of the programme which? was a panel? discussion by representatives of some of the sub-sectors of agriculture, and Round Table discussions on various topics, was condensed into a very short period, so that no in-depth discussion was possible.

Added to that is the fact that three Town Hall meetings were held in various parts of the country after the National Consultation had taken place. Isn?t this the wrong way around? Shouldn?t there have been meetings with the various sub-sectors to identify constraints and then use the National Consultation to discuss the constraints and recommend solutions ?

Now we have to produce a white paper, supposedly based on the input from these consultations, which will go before Cabinet? and if approved, be the basis of future policy. By that time, I fear we will have no agricultural sector so the policy will not be necessary.

In my opinion,? the answer to the majority of the sector?s problems lies in its reorganization? so that a private sector led Co-ordinating Entity ? the Barbados Agricultural? Trading Trust , oversees a number of market driven trading projects where? individual markets (cruise ships, hotels/restaurants, agro-processing, supermarkets, vendors, farmers? markets, institutions) are twinned with suppliers(large and small farmers, householders, BAS and brokers) production is planned for the markets and? produce is purchased at arranged prices.

This proposal was put forward to government? since 2009, with no response to date. Such procrastination continues to prevent any progress in agriculture and will indeed lead to its demise.

Wei took gold in fine fashion winning eight of 11 races with Navin Singsart (THA) finishing nine points behind in second. Thailand's Nattaphong Phonoppharat rounded off the men's podium.

Feng was just as impressive winning seven races on way to gold. Thailand's Siripon Kaewduang-Ngam claimed gold at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games and one year later reached the ISAF Youth Worlds podium finishing second. A physical therapy assistant is one who helps out a physical therapist in providing physical therapy procedures to patients. PT Assistants are within the oversight of a Physical Therapist when providing therapies. PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Anthony Stolarz tried to drink in the biggest moment of his life.

The crowd inside Consol Energy Center never gave him a chance, booing the lanky 6-foot-5 goaltender the moment he stepped onto the stage after being selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round of the NHL draft.

Hey, it's what happens when you wear orange and black at the home of the Pittsburgh Penguins, even if it's over a suit. And Stolarz knows it's only going to get worse if he ever makes it to the big club.

"It's good to know there's such a passionate rivalry there," he said.

The not-so-friendly welcome to the NHL for Stolarz was about as eventful as it got during a quiet final day of the draft. Six drama-free rounds whizzed by Saturday without the fireworks produced Friday night, when the Pittsburgh Penguins shook up the league by sending center Jordan Staal to Carolina and defenseman Zbynek Michalek to Phoenix.

"Starting in the last week, some of the things going on behind the scenes felt more like free agency or a trade deadline than a draft," Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma said.

Maybe for the Penguins. Not so much for the rest of the league. The only trades Saturday consisted mostly of an exchange of draft picks as some of the biggest names out there ? namely Columbus Blue Jackets forward Rick Nash and Vancouver goaltender Roberto Luongo ? stayed put.

"I'm not surprised," said Canucks general manager Mike Gillis. "You need a lot of synergy to get trades done. You need compelling reasons to do them. If we're considering trading a very high end player, you need compelling reasons to do it. We're going to go through and we exhaust every one of those reasons."

Besides, it likely won't remain quiet for long. There could be more movement over the next week before the free agency period begins July 1.

"There was certainly plenty of offers that were made, at least that came my way," Penguins general manager Ray Shero said. "I think you'll see these things start to pick up once we get to July 1. There might be a domino."

No wonder teams seemed to be in a hurry to get out the door and on to bigger things. After they needed four hours to get through the first round Friday, the final six rounds were completed in under three hours.

The Blue Jackets opened the second round by taking Swedish goaltender Oscar Dansk with the 31st overall pick, though he was quickly followed by a number of Americans.

There were 56 Americans selected in the draft, including nine in the second round, led by winger Nicolas Kerdiles. The 18-year-old from California was taken with the 36th overall pick by the Anaheim Ducks.

The Winnipeg Jets grabbed center Lukas Sutter with the 39th pick. Sutter is the son of former NHL player Rich Sutter and the cousin of new Pittsburgh center Brandon Sutter, who was traded to the Penguins on Friday in exchange for Staal. Uncle Darryl coached the L.A. Kings to their first Stanley Cup earlier this month.

Lukas Sutter sounded an awful lot like the rest of the members of hockey's most prodigious family when talking about his future.

"I'm the kind of gritty two-way player teams need," Sutter said.

There were plenty of players from that vein chosen Saturday in a draft that lacked the kind of offensive firepower of recent years.

The Edmonton Oilers drafted dynamic Nail Yakupov with the No. 1 pick Friday, hoping the speedy Russian can provide the once-proud franchise a much-needed boost. But the first round was dominated by defense.

While the first-round picks are considered near locks to one day get a shot in the NHL, the road to the league is longer for those chosen on the second day. That's not a big deal for players like Stolarz, who never imagined he'd be in position to get drafted a year ago.

The New Jersey native grew up rooting for the Devils and idolizing Martin Brodeur. He was cut by a pair of Eastern Junior Hockey League teams last summer before catching on with the Corpus Christi IceRays following an open tryout.

"I heard it was right on the beach," he said with a laugh. "That was good enough for me."

Stolarz, who is 6-foot-5 and has a wingspan of nearly 7 feet, will play at the University of Nebraska-Omaha next year, and it will likely be several years before he's NHL-ready. The same can be said for most of the 181 players selected Saturday, if they make it to the league at all.
