NASA's Dawn spacecraft prepares for trek toward dwarf planet

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? NASA's Dawn spacecraft is on track to become the first probe to orbit and study two distant solar system destinations, to help scientists answer questions about the formation of our solar system. The spacecraft is scheduled to leave the giant asteroid Vesta on Sept. 4 PDT (Sept. 5 EDT) to start its two-and-a-half-year journey to the dwarf planet Ceres.

Dawn began its 3-billion-mile (5-billion kilometer) odyssey to explore the two most massive objects in the main asteroid belt in 2007. Dawn arrived at Vesta in July 2011 and will reach Ceres in early 2015. Dawn's targets represent two icons of the asteroid belt that have been witness to much of our solar system's history.

To make its escape from Vesta, the spacecraft will spiral away as gently as it arrived, using a special, hyper-efficient system called ion propulsion. Dawn's ion propulsion system uses electricity to ionize xenon to generate thrust. The 12-inch-wide ion thrusters provide less power than conventional engines, but can maintain thrust for months at a time.

"Thrust is engaged, and we are now climbing away from Vesta atop a blue-green pillar of xenon ions," said Marc Rayman, Dawn's chief engineer and mission director, at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "We are feeling somewhat wistful about concluding a fantastically productive and exciting exploration of Vesta, but now have our sights set on dwarf planet Ceres.

Dawn's orbit provided close-up views of Vesta, revealing unprecedented detail about the giant asteroid. The mission revealed that Vesta completely melted in the past, forming a layered body with an iron core. The spacecraft also revealed the scarring from titanic collisions Vesta suffered in its southern hemisphere, surviving not one but two colossal impacts in the last two billion years. Without Dawn, scientists would not have known about the dramatic troughs sculpted around Vesta, which are ripples from the two south polar impacts.

"We went to Vesta to fill in the blanks of our knowledge about the early history of our solar system," said Christopher Russell, Dawn's principal investigator, based at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). "Dawn has filled in those pages, and more, revealing to us how special Vesta is as a survivor from the earliest days of the solar system. We can now say with certainty that Vesta resembles a small planet more closely than a typical asteroid."

The mission to Vesta and Ceres is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., for the agency's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Dawn is a project of the directorate's Discovery Program, which is managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

UCLA is responsible for the overall Dawn mission science. Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va., designed and built the spacecraft. The German Aerospace Center, the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, the Italian Space Agency and the Italian National Astrophysical Institute are part of the mission's team. The California Institute of Technology in Pasadena manages JPL for NASA.

"Pets Are Family Too" Dog Adoption Day to be held at Stanley Plaza this Saturday (with photos)

August 30, 2012 | No Comments

The ?Pets Are Family Too? Dog Adoption Day will be held this Saturday (September 1) from 11am to 6pm at the Amphitheatre Playground of Stanley Plaza.

The adoption day is jointly organised by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Society for Abandoned Animals, the Lifelong Animal Protection Charity and Hong Kong Dog Rescue to encourage people to adopt abandoned or unclaimed dogs and promote responsible pet ownership. Members of the public who successfully adopt a dog via this event will be awarded a free ?Dog Behaviour Training Course? offered by the AFCD for their pet.

Many animals deserve a second chance to be a lovable pet after being abandoned or given up by their owners. The AFCD encourages the public to adopt abandoned or surrendered animals through approved non-profit-making animal welfare organisations. Currently, abandoned pets or unclaimed animals with a friendly temperament and good health will be vaccinated against major animal diseases and dewormed by the AFCD and sent to 13 partner animal welfare organisations for adoption. Free desexing operations will also be offered to all AFCD-selected animals being adopted via the partner animal welfare organisations.

An array of informative and entertaining activities will be held at the adoption day including celebrity experience-sharing of keeping dogs, an educational exhibition, game booths and an introduction to dog adoption services. Visitors will have a chance to meet the dogs that are up for adoption.

Admission is free. Participants are welcome to bring along their pets. All dogs entering the venue should be under proper control in addition to being licensed, vaccinated and microchipped.

For details of the event, please visit www.afcd.gov.hk.

Media: Plane from Spain to Amsterdam not hijacked

(AP) ? Fears that a passenger plane had been hijacked en route from Malaga in Spain to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport appear unfounded and a passenger says there is no hostage situation, Dutch and Spanish media reported Wednesday.

Spanish newspaper El Pais cited a spokesperson from the Spanish carrier Vueling as saying there was no hijacking and blaming the incident on a communication problem between the pilot and control tower.

National Dutch broadcaster NOS spoke by phone with a person it identified as one of the passengers on board who said that the plane was calm and there was no hostage situation.

The Vueling plane was parked at a remote corner of Schiphol, about two kilometers (1.5 miles) from the main terminal, surrounded by security personnel and several ambulances, according to photographers at the scene.

News website Nu.nl had reported that the plane was escorted to Schiphol by two F16 fighter jets. The report cited the Defense Ministry.

Airport authorities and security services did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

No further details were immediately available.

Legal Trade In Small Arms Doubles In Six Years | Army & Land ...

By SwissInfo on Thursday, August 30th, 2012

The legal international trade in small arms, light weapons, their parts and ammunition is worth at least $8.5 billion (SFr8.15 billion) annually, according to the Swiss-led Small Arms Survey 2012.

This figure, released on Monday at the United Nations in New York, is more than double the previous estimate from 2006.

According to the Small Arms Survey (SAS), the increase from the previous estimate of about $4 billion is due to various factors. Two important sources are large-scale government spending by states involved in the conflicts in Iran and Afghanistan and increased purchases of small arms and ammunition by civilians in the United States.

Better information and improved research methods also played a role in refining the estimate.

Eric Berman, SAS managing director, said at the UN headquarters in New York that the report?s findings on trade were based on four years of investigation. The researchers reviewed tens of thousands of records, customs reports and other government data.

He said the researchers thought the authorized trade was larger than the illicit trade, which nevertheless may do more damage. The two trades combined would clearly have a value over $10 billion, he added.

Switzerland among top exporters
In 2009, according to the latest report, the top exporters with a trade of at least $100 million a year were the United States, Italy, Germany, Brazil, Austria, Japan, Switzerland, Russia, France, South Korea, Belgium and Spain (in descending order).

The top importers (at least $100 million) were the United States, Britain, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Canada, Germany and France.

The calculations were compiled using the most recent published customs data, but poor transparency in state reporting among both large and small exporters still keeps a great deal of the authorised trade obscure, the SAS noted.

State transparency on small arms transfers to and from Europe and North America had been relatively strong, but lagged in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, Berman said.

?Improved transparency from important exporters such as China and Russia, as well as states that re-export surplus weapons, would improve our understanding of the sources and means through which authorized arms transfers fuel the illicit trade,? he said.

Transparency barometer
The Survey also contains a ?transparency barometer? that assesses reporting practices of 52 countries for 2010.

The most transparent were Switzerland, Britain and Romania. The US was 14th, China 45th and Russia 47th. The three least-transparent countries were Iran, North Korea and the United Arab Emirates, all scoring zero points.

Of a maximum of 25 points, the average score of all 52 countries was 11.2, a drop of almost two per cent compared with the previous year. Switzerland scored 21 points. It was the only country to have produced a dedicated national report on small arms and light weapons exports.

Overall, between 2001 and 2011, state transparency on small arms, light weapons, their parts, accessories and ammunition improved by more than 40 per cent.

The report states that despite progress among some states, there remains much scope for improved reporting.

Illicit trade
The SAS is also engaged in a multi-year effort to examine the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons, with a focus on Afghanistan, Iraq and Somalia.

A first conclusion researchers have come to is that non-state groups in all three cases appear to almost always be using older-generation weapons, the vast majority Kalashnikov-style assault rifles. Armed groups in Afghanistan and Iraq seem to have only scant access to technologically sophisticated or latest-generation light weapons.

One exception is that new data on weapons seized in Iraq suggest that a significant part of seized Iranian weapons were manufactured only recently.

The SAS also analysed other topics, including armed violence in Latin America and the Caribbean, state policy and drug violence, Somali piracy and private security companies.

There is also a chapter on non-lethal firearm violence. Worldwide at least two million people are living with firearm injuries sustained in non-conflict zones over the past decade.

Blackie and The Rodeo Kings announce ... - kawarthaNOW.com

In 1996, when Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing and Tom Wilson came together to record what was supposed to be a one-off tribute album to the great songwriter Willie P. Bennett (of Peterborough), there was nary a thought that they would eventually become a going concern as a band. At the time, all three members were deeply committed to burgeoning solo careers that they had no intentions of putting on hold.

Twelve years later, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings has organically evolved into one of the finest roots-oriented bands in North America, having released six CDs and evolved a feeling of brotherhood manifested in a sense of groove, timbral blend and melodic and rhythmic play that is distinctive, mystical, energizing and constantly evocative. The sum is indeed greater than the parts ? and the parts are as good as they get. Blackie and the Rodeo Kings remains one of Canada?s greatest musical treasures.

The idea for their current release ? Kings and Queens ? was hatched in a rental van at the end of a Rodeo Kings tour. Late one night, on a long drive between Somewhere and Somewhere-else, the band began talking about the various female artists they have had the privilege of working with over the years. What began with a page torn out of a notebook and a lot of interjections like ?Hey, what about ? ? and ?Wouldn?t it be great to work with ?? has transformed into a whole album featuring these legendary and iconic female voices; one on each of 14 stellar tracks.

The result is an impressive collaboration. Kings and Queens pairs the band with some of their favourite female singers and friends ? and some of the biggest names in roots, blues and jazz: Roseanne Cash, Emmylou Harris, Pam Tillis, Serena Ryder, Lucinda Williams, Cassandra Wilson, Amy Helm, Janiva Magness, Mary Margaret O?Hara, Sam Phillips, Sara Watkins, Exene Cervenka, Patti Scialfa and Holly Cole. Grammy- and Juno-winning producer Colin Linden (Bruce Cockburn, Tom Wilson, Stephen Fearing, Colin James) took the helm for the new album, and the new recordings have taken the Kings from Nashville to Toronto to New York City to New Orleans, Los Angeles, Woodstock and back again. As the band explains, ?No destination is too far for love ??

Following the success of their March 2012 Massey Hall show in Toronto, Blackie and The Rodeo Kings is proud to announce the Kings and Queens Tour, named for the latest record. Some of the album?s ?Queens? and other close friends will be making special guest appearances, performing live with Blackie and the Rodeo Kings throughout the tour. Colin, Stephen and Tom last graced the Market Hall stage as The Rodeo Kings in July of 1997 at the ?Willie P. Benefit? ? a fundraiser for their songwriting hero who was off the road at the time due to illness.

On September 18, 2012, just in time for the tour, Vancouver-based record label File Under: Music will release Kings and Queens: The Deluxe Edition, which features two additional tracks with the legendary Patty Loveless.

Keep up with the band and read more about the tour at www.blackieandtherodeokings.com.

Formed in 2008, Harlan Pepper are four young men from Hamilton playing music with an old soul. Channeling the ghosts of long-gone AM car radios and haunting the dusty aisles of small town vinyl record bins, Jimmy Hayes (guitar, pedal steel, harmonica), Dan Edmonds (banjo, keys, vocals), Thompson Wilson (bass, vocals), and Marlon Nicolle (drums, vocals) are barely out of high school.

Recorded at Hamilton?s Vibewrangler Studio with Aaron Goldstein (Huron, Espanola), their debut album Young And Old conjures up a session where Gram Parsons, Buck Owens and Hank Williams pay a Basement Tapes visit to sit in with contemporaries like Joel Plaskett and Jeff Tweedy. Moving from the wind-in-your-hair banjo-led opener ?Great Lakes?, to the road-ready hook-and-head-nod of ?Little Miss Sunshine?, to the sing-a-long crowd favourite of ?Reefer?, this is a set of nine songs that roll along with the top down.

Already an accomplished live band, Harlan Pepper has shared the stage with the likes of the Blackie and The Rodeo Kings, Sadies, Born Ruffians, Two Hours Traffic, Lee Harvey Osmond, Huron, the Arkells, and Feist. With the AM radio crackling out a distant signal and a stack of instruments older than all of them in the back of the van, the band will be touring all through 2012 in support of _Young And Old_.

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR ?FACES IN THE MIRROR? PRODUCER ...

Boyd Tinsley?s name and face are known to millions of admirers all over the globe ? but not for his film work. Tinsley has spent the past two decades of his life as the violinist for the Dave Matthews Band, going platinum dozens of times over. But with the release of Faces In The Mirror, Tinsley enters into the world of film for the first time, adding producer and screenwriter to his resume. Though the actors in Faces don?t sing, it?s almost a sort of cinematic opera. The film follows the personal odyssey of Ben (Ryan Orr), a man who has just lost his father?? the story of Ben coming to terms with his tragedy is told primarily through songs (also written by Tinsley). The end result is an unusual, slightly surreal film that Tinsley refers to as a ?psychedelic drama,? incorporating music, poetry, and a minimum of dialogue?? a natural step for a musician, perhaps, but an unorthodox one for a filmmaker. But on August 30, the whole world will be able to witness Faces In The Mirror?s premiere, which will be broadcast online at SnagFilms.com live from Seattle, followed by a post-screening concert.

Boyd Tinsley in Faces in the Mirror

Filmmaker: The story feels like it comes from a personal place, how much of it relates to your own experience?

Tinsley: The story does come from a personal place. It comes from a period in my life where I was really down after Leroi Moore, our sax player, had died in the fall of 2008. I was just so down I knew the only thing that would help me back up was to do something creative. Doing a film was something I had been thinking about for 15 years at different times. It hit me ? it?s time to do a film. Leroi?s death was definitely a part of the story that deals with grief and pain, but?in building a character for the film, I wanted to have something of the character?s life that was also in the life of the actor himself. I wanted the actor to be able to bring some truth to the character from is own experience. Ryan Orr, the lead actor in this, his father had died about three or four years earlier?that was still fresh with him. I thought this was something he could bring a lot of realism, a lot of feeling to. So it?s a combination of his life and my life at the time that sort of created the beginnings of that story.

Filmmaker: What has your relationship with film been throughout your life? What directors have affected you the most?

Tinsley: I?ve always loved films. I grew up in the ?70s and there were a lot of classic films on TV on Sundays. One of the directors I learned about through TV in the ?70s was Hitchcock. Of course The Birds would come on TV, Psycho would come on TV, those were my first exposure to him, but I went on to watch Rear Window and North By Northwest and Vertigo. I loved Hitchcock?s style. A lot of those movies that he did with [composer] Bernard Hermann; it?s like the music and the film were both telling the story, it was almost like the music was another character in the story. That was something that I always loved. I wanted to feel something emotional when something big happens on screen?? the music should accompany that. Hitchcock sometimes will be very spare on the dialogue, he will let the music speak for him. One of the boldest things I think I?ve ever seen on film is that long period of silence [in North by Northwest] when Cary Grant goes out to the Kansas cornfields to find that secret agent that doesn?t actually exist. There?s nothing but a few cars whizzing by every now and then, the sound of tumbleweeds going by, this silence goes on forever ? he keeps the suspense going. It?s almost like the silence speaks louder than if there were words and music there. So things like that always impressed me. Hitchcock gave me a lot of courage, and he?s definitely the director that?s most influential to me. I will do everything I can do to make people feel something, to make the movie and the music dance together.

Filmmaker: There are some really evocative outdoor settings in the film. Where were those shot?

Tinsley: All of the movie was shot in Charlottesville, Virginia. A few years before we started filming, [co-executive producer] Fenton Williams and I?? he was the lighting director of DMB, and neither one of us happened to have done a movie but we had both wanted to?? we just happened to be at a photo shoot in Charlottesville one day at the peak of fall foliage, which is absolutely beautiful. It?s surrounded by mountains and trees, we were just sort of looking out on this balcony during the photo shoot and one of us said, ?It would be so great to film a movie in Charlottesville in the fall,? and the other one said ?I was just thinking the same thing.? Fenton and I are on the same wavelength on a lot of things creatively, and that was the first notion that we had together that ?Hey, we?re gonna make a movie.? We knew that we wanted to include some of the natural beauty of Charlottesville in this movie. We didn?t actually get to shooting until the spring. We just happened to get lucky, and found the perfect spring days for our shooting, particularly if you look at the funeral scene. I?ve never seen flowers and plants look so perfect and so beautiful and so lush. We had a great cinematographer, Johnny St. Ours, that captured that. Aaron [Farrington, director] is the one that set up these amazing shots. It just really blew me away to realize how fortunate we are to live in a place that?s so beautiful and how fortunate we were to have some amazing days. We knew that we had this beautiful landscape, that was one of the natural gifts that we had being where we were, so we used that a lot, it?s really a big part of the emotion of the film.

Filmmaker: How did Aaron Farrington come to direct the film?

Tinsley: I had never made a movie before and I really did not know the mechanics of filmmaking, but the thing that I had was that I knew what I wanted the movie to do. ?Aaron was brought on board by Fenton Williams?Fenton was the person I called up when I decided to make this movie initially, to direct it. But Fenton is also the director of lighting for the Dave Matthews Band, so he didn?t really have the time to spend on this project. It started off initially to be a 20-minute short, and Fenton said, ?Okay, we can do this in a matter of weeks.? And then along the process of planning this, we decided to make this a full feature-length film. Then Fenton said, ?Well, I?m gonna have to have someone else come in.? Aaron was mostly a photographer?but the way he shot, he also liked to use Super 8 a lot, and I just loved the feel of that, and I liked his vibe. He and I didn?t know very much about each other, but I could tell that he got it, like when we were talking about the music and how it would fit in with different scenes. He has the most beautiful, amazing shots. When I work with him, we?ll talk about scenes, but we?ll talk about what I want in a very general sense. There?s this one scene in the movie where there?s a big bonfire. I just told him, ?I want this big bonfire scene with young people dancing around it,? and a few other elements, but I never said anything about how it was supposed to look, how it was supposed to feel. And he just went to this place that I would never have imagined. He takes what I ask him and he makes it 10 times better than I could ever have imagined.

Filmmaker: How early in the process did you know that you wanted the songs to carry the bulk of the narrative?

Tinsley: This whole idea came from my head, things like making the music first and making the movie dance with the music, having very minimal dialogue. There was a whole lot that was just in my head. Creating the emotion between the film and the music, letting those two mirror each other and become one so you have this dual emotional experience. Even the storytelling is more from the emotions you feel from the music and that you feel from the lead character, his eyes, his charisma, what he?s showing us from his body language ? very much like a silent picture. This movie?s so visually stimulating ? one of the terms that comes to mind is it?s like a psychedelic drama. It?s very dreamlike, very visual.?So Aaron and I did, for a few years, create our own way of making a movie. Aaron had made videos, of course I had shot videos with the Dave Matthews Band, but we?d never really made a movie before, so in doing that we had license to do it any way that we want. Working with Aaron is amazing, I?ve never worked with somebody for two years straight in a very small room before and not gone for their throat [laughs].

About the Society of Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiologists are physicians who specialize in minimally invasive, targeted treatments. They offer the most in-depth knowledge of the least invasive treatments available coupled with diagnostic and clinical experience across all specialties. They use X-ray, MRI and other imaging to advance a catheter in the body, such as in an artery, to treat at the source of the disease internally. As the inventors of angioplasty and the catheter-delivered stent, which were first used in the legs to treat peripheral arterial disease, interventional radiologists pioneered minimally invasive modern medicine. Today, interventional oncology is a growing specialty area of interventional radiology. Interventional radiologists can deliver treatments for cancer directly to the tumor without significant side effects or damage to nearby normal tissue.

Many conditions that once required surgery can be treated less invasively by interventional radiologists. Interventional radiology treatments offer less risk, less pain and less recovery time compared to open surgery. Visit www.SIRweb.org.

Funding provides opportunity to engage in IR research in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Medical Fellows Research Program

FAIRFAX, Va.The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) Foundation announced the second year of collaboration with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's (HHMI) prestigious Medical Research Fellows Program. Created with an eye toward the future of the specialty, SIR Foundation will provide funding for one medical student conducting preclinical research in interventional radiology during 2013. The online application is available at http://www.hhmi.org/grants/individuals/medical-fellows/.

"The SIR Foundation places great emphasis on this kind of high-quality, focused research that nurtures future physician-scientists and is so beneficial to the specialty," said John A. Kaufman, M.D., FSIR, SIR Foundation chair. "By funding this initiative, SIR Foundation provides an opportunity for students who seek to make a difference in medicine and reinforces the importance of following in the footsteps of our specialty's founders," added Kaufman, an interventional radiologist and professor of radiology, medicine and surgery at Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland and chief of vascular and interventional radiology and director of the Dotter Interventional Institute, Portland, Ore.

HHMI funds up to 66 applicants, and SIR Foundation's commitment allows for the funding of one high-achieving, medical student engaged in full-time research at the interface of the disciplines of science, medicine and engineering. HHMI also has collaborations with other organizations to fund additional students.

"Interventional radiologists consistently design and improve on innovative treatments that lead to improved patient care and quality of life," said SIR President Marshall Hicks, M.D., FSIR, head of the division of diagnostic imaging at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. "This highly competitive and prestigious award will help cultivate future interventional radiology leaders and reinforce our commitment to evidence-based medicine," noted Hicks, who represents the national society of nearly 5,000 doctors, scientists and allied health professionals dedicated to improving health care through minimally invasive treatments.

"SIR Foundation, which is already playing a key role in the development of new knowledge about the specialty, supports promising young scientists with this introduction to research and academic opportunities," said Filip Banovac, M.D., the SIR Foundation research policy division chair. "SIR Foundation's commitment will encourage budding researchers by providing mentors and hands-on experience in the lab where students will develop transferable, real-world research skills," added Banovac, an interventional radiologist with Georgetown University Hospitals in Washington, D.C.

The HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program enables medical, dental and veterinary students from schools in the United States to spend a year conducting basic, translational or applied biomedical research full time at any school or nonprofit research institution in the United Statesexcept at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

Research may be conducted abroad if the fellow's mentor is affiliated with a U.S. institution. Selected fellows receive a stipend and fellow's and research allowances.

The HHMI fellowship application process requires that applicants have selected a solid biomedical research project (either new or ongoing) and established a relationship with a mentor who has strong grant support and a solid training and publications track record. The application deadline is Jan. 11, 2013. A multilevel evaluation and review process will determine the program's final awardees.

Acceptance letters are expected to be sent out in March 2013; the year-long fellowship will begin in the summer of 2013. Students may apply during any year of medical school; however, applicants in the last year of medical school must defer graduation until completion of the fellowship.

White House race offers voters many clear choices

(AP) ? November's presidential election offers Americans one of the starkest choices in years. On this, at least, President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney can agree.

Obama says voters will choose between "two fundamentally different visions of where we take America." To which his Republican rival counters: "If you want to know where his vision leads, open your eyes...It leads to lost jobs, lost homes, lost dreams."

Romney promises a countervision of "growth and jobs and economic vitality."

There are no shades of gray. Beyond the usual election-year distortions and exaggerations, a yawning issues gulf separates the two candidates.

Romney sharpened the distinctions by selecting Wisconsin Republican Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate, a choice that cheered the GOP's conservative base.

The differences will be on display over the next two weeks as Romney, and then Obama, host their national party conventions.

The world views of the two tickets seem like mirror-images.

Obama sees government as the catalyst for economic growth, a safety net for the neediest, a protector against free-market excesses and a safeguard for the environment. That philosophy led to his stimulus and auto-bailout programs and his support for legislation tightening federal financial regulation. In the future, he wants more government spending on education, on highways and bridges and in promoting renewable energy.

In other words, Obama wants a government that is active on behalf of its citizens while Romney and Ryan believe it should get out of the way.

Borrowing a page from Ronald Reagan, Romney brands government the problem ? not part of the solution. He says overreaching government stifles growth, innovation and productivity. He would slash individual and corporate taxes, lighten federal regulations and trim budget deficits mostly through deep spending cuts.

Their positions hew closely to present day Democratic and Republican hyperpartisan orthodoxy.

"The old rule-of-thumb was that to win the nomination you first win your base and then move to the middle. Both Obama and Romney are being forced to play it closer to their bases than in the past," said presidential scholar Stephen Hess at the Brookings Institution think tank. By now, both candidates should have begun a migration to the center to attract crucial independent voters. "But that's not happening," Hess said.

And with a fifty-fifty polarized nation and a shrinking number of undecided voters, energizing their respective bases is of critical importance.

The candidates harbor many 180-degree differences:

? Romney opposes tax increases of any kind, although he says he would close some unspecified loopholes. He'd extend all Bush-era tax cuts and lower corporate and individual rates. Obama would raise taxes on households earning more than $250,000 a year and further raise taxes on those making more than $1 million.

? Obama supports abortion choice and gay marriage. "Mine will be a pro-life presidency," says the anti-abortion rights Romney, who also opposes gay marriage.

? Obama favors easing immigration restrictions and won't deport illegal immigrants brought here as children. Romney takes a tough stance against undocumented workers, even suggesting "self-deportation." However, he won't say whether he'd rescind Obama's decision on illegal immigrants who came as children.

? Romney would give oil and coal production more emphasis and approve the Keystone XL pipeline to bring oil from Canada to U.S. Gulf Coast ports. Obama says that, for now, the nation should tap "all of the above" energy sources while moving toward renewable and other "green" energy. He would strengthen regulation of global-warming-producing greenhouse gases and has so far blocked the Keystone pipeline. Romney says, "We don't know what is causing climate change."

? Obama has welcomed easy-money policies of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke to stimulate lending and protect the nation's banking system. Romney says he'd ditch Bernanke when his term expires in 2014.

? Romney charges Obama isn't tough enough on China, too accommodating to Iran and an unreliable ally of Israel. He'd review steps Obama took on Israel and "do the opposite."

? Obama is forging ahead to implement his health care law now that the Supreme Court has upheld it. Romney would begin steps to repeal it on "Day One," even though it's modeled on the Massachusetts plan he championed as governor.

While the rivals point fingers at one another over who's out of touch with ordinary Americans, both campaigns agree the economy is the top issue.

Obama lately has sought to focus attention on tax inequity, Romney points to lame job growth on the president's watch.

Romney governed Massachusetts as a political moderate and reached across the aisle to majority-party Democrats. Some analysts suggest he may again govern from the middle if elected.

But so far Romney hasn't strayed much from conservative dogma, while Obama has abandoned serious efforts to cut deals with Republicans.

If Romney really is a moderate at heart, "he hasn't made it any easier for himself in the campaign so far," said William Galston, a top domestic policy adviser to then-President Bill Clinton.

GOP consultant Rich Galen suggests the sharp Obama-Romney divide reflects divisions across America but more immediately echoes the harsh, unforgiving partisan rhetoric in Congress.

"It's becoming much more like the British system where, no matter what the government does, the opposition hates it. It's never a good idea," Galen said. "I'm not sure it's the best possible course for our republic."

Romney survived a brutal GOP primary season only by repeatedly fending off charges by rivals from his own party that he was too moderate. And Obama moved closer to his Democratic base as the recovery slowed and as Republicans made his defeat a top priority.

Norman Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute said Romney may have been permanently altered by the rings of fire he had to jump through to prove he was conservative enough to carry the GOP banner.

"If you take only the public statements and the promises that have been made, the choice is a stark one," Ornstein said, "starker than we've seen before."
