Romney's bounce from convention looks short-lived: Reuters/Ipsos poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A modest bump in popularity for U.S. presidential hopeful Mitt Romney from this week's Republican Party convention looks to be short-lived, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Democratic President Barack Obama regained a narrow lead on Saturday by 44 percent to 43 percent over his Republican challenger, former Massachusetts Governor Romney, in the latest daily installment of the four-day rolling poll.

Romney was ahead by one point in Friday's online poll and two points in Thursday's survey as his campaign came under a blaze of media attention at the convention in Tampa, Florida.

In his acceptance speech on Thursday, Romney urged voters to get behind him and help rebuild the economy. His address followed three days of speeches by Republicans, including testimonies from Romney's relatives and friends aimed at improving the image of a candidate who is often seen as stiff or aloof.

"This wasn't a lightning bolt convention," Ipsos pollster Julia Clark said. "Comparatively speaking, this was a more muted convention in general ... So it doesn't surprise me that (the bump in polls) wasn't a great deal bigger."

Post-convention poll bounces are common and typically short-lived, and Obama could see one himself next week after he formally accepts his party's nomination for a second term at the Democratic convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

But with the candidates treading water in a dead-heat race, Clark said she expected polls to remain extremely close all the way to the November 6 vote.

Romney's muted benefit from the convention may be in part because of his decision to unveil his vice-presidential pick, Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan, weeks before the convention.

The convention was also overshadowed by Hurricane Isaac, which caused the cancellation of Monday's events, as well as a bizarre performance right before Romney's speech of Hollywood star Clint Eastwood, who addressed an imaginary Obama in an empty chair.

The Reuters/Ipsos rolling poll measures sentiment during the two-week convention season by polling over the previous four days.

The survey released on Saturday found that of registered voters who have seen, heard or read at least something about the convention, 39 percent thought it was excellent or good, with nearly as many saying it was average.

Among Republicans, 65 percent said the convention went well and 31 percent rated it average.

On Friday, the poll found Romney improving his standing with voters on various favorable characteristics, such as being "a good person" or "tough enough for the job."

Those gains largely ebbed on Saturday, but Romney continued to rise in the key category of likeability. Thirty-two percent of those surveyed found him likeable, a one-point gain from Friday. Obama's likeability lost one point to 47 percent.

The two candidates also emerged neck-in-neck in the question of who "has the right values," with Romney at 38 percent and Obama at 39 percent. On Monday, Obama led in this category by nine points with 43 percent.

For the survey, a sample of 1,505 of American registered voters was interviewed online. The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.

Personal 'thank you' for President Obama a morale boost for Fort Bliss soldiers, families

?? Photos: President Barack Obama visits Fort Bliss

FORT BLISS -- The four-hour wait, the heat inside a stuffy hangar and dealing with a large overflow crowd were all worth it.

That's the verdict from some of the 5,000 soldiers and family members who gathered Friday at East Fort Bliss to see and hear President Barack Obama on his third trip to the ever-growing installation.

To them, it was all about receiving a big personal "thank you" from the nation's commander in chief for their service and sacrifice.

Spc. Heath Howes was severely injured in a bomb blast in Afghanistan just two months ago. Howes got to celebrate his 31st birthday by meeting Obama and shaking his hand.

"I couldn't ask for a better birthday present," said Howes, who is recovering but remains in a wheelchair after injuring his back, head and knee and suffering a broken ankle.

Outside, an overflow crowd sat on heavy equipment, a Bradley Fighting Vehicle and Abrams tank.

Staff Sgt. Abdul Kamara was so excited about seeing the president that he could hardly stand still during the four-hour wait he and most soldiers endured.

Kamara is originally from Sierra Leone in West Africa, but has become a naturalized U.S. citizen. This November will bring the first election in which

he gets to vote.

"Wow. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience," said Kamara, who has done four tours of duty in Iraq. "I wouldn't miss this for the world. I would have waited another four hours. I'd camp out here if I had to."

Kamara's wife, Mozella, said it was a wonderful gesture on the president's part to visit Fort Bliss.

"What other way to say thank you than to show up in person?" she said.

Brig. Gen. Dennis D. Doyle, commander of Beaumont Army Medical Center, said soldiers at the event were "pumped" to see and hear the president.

"It's even uplifting for us old soldiers too," Doyle said.

Maj. Margie Brown, the 1st Armored Division's deputy provost marshal, said the visit shows strong support for America's troops.

"We still have troops in Afghanistan and throughout the world," Brown said. "It shows we are not forgotten. It boosts morale for troops, especially those who have deployed or are getting ready to deploy. To come to Fort Bliss, it's a positive thing. It says a lot."

Fort Bliss is now the largest deployment point for the nation's military, Fort Bliss officials said. Each year about 20,000 soldiers, reservists, National Guard and members of sister services deploy out of Fort Bliss.

"It was always the Fort Braggs and Fort Campbells that got the attention," Brown said.

But that's changing, as evidenced by Obama's most recent visit, she said.

Fort Bliss continues to play a major role in the war in Af ghan istan.

About 3,400 soldiers from the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division returned from Afghanistan this summer.

About 350 soldiers from the 4th Infantry Brigade, 1st Armored Division are still in Afghanistan, and up to 4,000 soldiers from the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division are preparing to deploy this winter.

Second Lt. John Bockmann is one of the soldiers getting ready to deploy. He is a helicopter pilot who flies Army medics.

Bockmann brought his wife, Katherine, and 9-month-old daughter, Emily, to see Obama.

When Bockmann was 6 years old, he got to see the soon-to-be-elected President Ronald Reagan come to his hometown of Tyler, Texas.

He wanted his daughter to be part of history, too.

"You can't ever count on something like this being more than a once-in-lifetime happening," he said.

Maj. Robin Pulley, a military police officer, also brought her daughter, 3-year-old Zoey.

"I told her that President Obama was coming. She said she wanted to see him," Pulley said. "She recognizes him on TV."

Master Sgt. Caesar Llanez has deployed twice to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan. Llanez, originally from Alpine, and his wife, Diana, from Marfa, said having the president visit recognizes the sacrifices that soldiers and their families go through.

"It's an acknowledgement that we're here, have gone through so many deployments and that he supports us," said Llanez, who one day hopes to attend the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss.

"We have not been forgotten," Llanez said. "It's a definite morale boost."

Report: Balotelli to have surgery, miss qualifiers

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:05 a.m. ET Sept. 1, 2012

MILAN (AP) -Mario Balotelli will reportedly miss Italy's opening two World Cup qualifiers to undergo Lasik eye surgery. He could also sit out Manchester City's Champions League opener against Real Madrid and his former manager at Inter Milan, Jose Mourinho.

The Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Balotelli will have the procedure Tuesday in his hometown of Brescia. He'll then need to rest for 10 days, ruling him out of Italy's matches with Bulgaria on Friday and Malta four days later.

City visits Madrid on Sept. 18, just 12 days after the surgery.

The Gazzetta quotes City manager Roberto Mancini as saying that Balotelli cannot put off the surgery any longer.

Balotelli led Italy with three goals when the Azzurri reached the European Championship final in July.

Giuliana and Bill Rancic Welcome Baby Boy!

Giuliana and Bill Rancic welcomed their first child Wednesday night.

Edward Duke Rancic was born at 10:12 p.m.in Denver, Colorado. The little boy, born via gestational carrier, weighed 7 pounds and 4 ounces.

"Bill and I are blessed beyond words to welcome Edward into our lives," Giuliana tells E! News, confirming the arrival. "Thank you so much to everyone who supported us."

"We are so in love with the little guy already!"

Giuliana and Bill Rancic

The labor was just over four hours and went smoothly and relatively quickly, with both Giuliana and Bill Rancic in the delivery room throughout.

The couple, whose long journey to become parents has been well documented, couldn't hold back tears of joy the moment that their son arrived.

The Rancics are "beyond elated" and couldn't believe that Edward - who is their biological child, even though a surrogate carried him - is here.

Bill cut the umbilical cord minutes after the baby was born, and Giuliana was the first to hold her son for a long while, then gave him to Bill.

The new parents both fed their baby, who they say had a big appetite, and share with us that he is doing very well and has had his first bath.

Bill announced his son's birth on Twitter saying:

"The 'Duke' has landed! Edward Duke Rancic was welcomed into the world last night at 7lbs 4oz. G & I feel blessed beyond words...We did it!"

The Duke's arrival comes just in time for the proud parents' fifth wedding anniversary on September 1. Appropriate! Congratulations!
