Watching This Guy Make Cotton Candy Art Is Incredibly Tasty

Have you ever tried to make cotton candy? Whenever I start twirling that stick in that intimidating centrifugal force of a cotton candy machine, my cotton candy turns out lumpy, tumorous and never looks appetizing. I mean it's still delicious—like any sugary cloud would be—but it looks disgusting. This guy though, makes art with cotton candy. Imagine an edible balloon animal. That's what this guy makes. God's work. [YouTube via Neatorama] More »

BEIRUT (AP) ? An explosion targeted the Syrian Interior Ministry building Wednesday in the capital, Damascus, state TV said. There was no immediate word on casualties.

Rebels fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad have been making inroads in their advance toward Damascus, the seat of the government, in recent weeks. Fighting has intensified in the southern districts of the Syrian capital and its suburbs.

The conflict started nearly 21 months ago as an uprising against Assad, whose family has ruled the country for four decades. It quickly morphed into a civil war, with rebels taking up arms to fight back against a bloody crackdown by the government.

According to activists, more than 40,000 people have been killed since March 2011.

Rebels have targeted the center of Damascus with bomb attacks in the past, most dramatically in July when they detonated explosives inside a high-level crisis meeting in Damascus that killed four top regime officials, including Assad's brother-in-law and the defense minister.

An al-Qaida linked group, Jabhat al-Nusra, has claimed many deadly blasts inside Syria.

On the political front, more than 100 countries recognized a new opposition coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people during an international meeting being held in Morocco. The U.S. also has declared the coalition is the "legitimate representative" of its country's people. The moves open the way for greater humanitarian assistance to the forces battling Assad and possibly even military aid.

But the presence of extremist groups among the rebel forces has raised concerns in the U.S. and other nations that are supporting the opposition in Syria but do not want to see extremists gain power in the region. The U.S. has blacklisted Jabhat al-Nusra ? Arabic for Victory Front ? as a foreign terrorist organization and said the group was part of al-Qaida in Iraq.

Al-Nusra fighters appear to be among the most effective fighting forces on the rebel side, spearheading many recent gains.

Western officials have raised concerns that an increasingly desperate Assad might unleash his chemical weapons stockpiles against rebels.

Syria is believed to have a formidable arsenal of chemical weapons, including sarin and mustard gas, although its exact dimensions are not known. Syria is not a signatory to the 1997 Convention on Chemical Weapons and thus is not obliged to permit international inspection.

The government in Damascus has been careful not to confirm it has chemical weapons, while insisting it would never use such weapons against its own people.

On Wednesday, Human Rights Watch accused the Syrian military of using air-delivered incendiary bombs in at least four locations across Syria since mid-November. Such weapons can contain any number of flammable substances, including napalm, thermite, or white phosphorus, and are designed to set fire to objects or to cause burn injuries. They are not considered chemical weapons.

Memphis, Most Obese US City, Moving From Fat To Fit - KPLR 11

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (CNN) ? Diagnosed last year with diabetes, the Rev. Dan Henley point-blank refused the medicine his physician initially suggested to regulate his out-of-whack blood sugar.

?When I got the diagnosis, I said ?I don?t receive that.? My doctor said, ?I don?t care if you receive or not, you?ve got diabetes. ? I?ll give you 90 days to control it on your own,? recounts Henley, 50, pastor of Journey Christian Church in Memphis, Tennessee. The city is home to more obese people than any other American city, according to the Gallup Well-Being Index.

At the start of that 90-day countdown, Henley, his two daughters and, marginally, his wife devised their own ?biggest loser? contest. They nixed a whole slew of comparatively high-calorie, low-nutrient favorite foods from their grocery list, ramped up their exercise ? and started talking, more candidly than ever, about how overconsumption of certain fare causes illness, injury and premature death.

?I used to have this slogan: ?I?m 280 pounds of cornbread, collard green-eating man,?? says the 6-foot-2 Henley. ?And the bigger I got, the more I laughed it off. Then, I got this wake-up call.?

Now 27 pounds lighter than he was a year ago ? and with his blood sugar levels now normal ? Henley also is founder and lead facilitator of Church Developers Network, one in an arsenal of organizations immersed in a community-wide campaign to move Memphis out of that notorious No. 1 slot.

More to the point, the organized Tennesseans say they aim to be exemplars of health and fitness in a nation where obesity is so pervasive that many a municipality finds itself only fractionally behind Memphis on the obesity rankings.

That 80 pastors of Memphis megachurches and modest congregations alike attended the network?s last monthly meeting is a marker of progress in what is ? by consensus of a complement of doctors, dietitians, public health experts, politicians and grass-roots organizers ? a tough but winnable fight against fat in Tennessee.

It?s true that a special ambulance designed to ferry up to 1,800 pounds of human flesh broke down within months of hitting the road earlier this year in Memphis.

But it?s also true that the city and surrounding Shelby County ? 650,000 of the county?s 935,000 residents are Memphians ? are forging ahead in a fitness effort that has yielded a record number of bike paths and farmers? markets.

The ?greenline? is hundreds of miles of multiuse trails for runners, bikers, walkers, strollers and such being developed on old Union Pacific Railway easements. There are ?shared areas of fitness,? or SAFE zones, and a push for more sidewalks in a car-dependent region not known for being pedestrian-friendly.

?In a city and region where deep-frying is an art form and barbecuing pork is almost a religious experience, we have made some notable steps in promoting healthy living and lifestyles,? says Mayor A.C. Wharton Jr., one of several elected officials who have backed what he terms an ?every nook and cranny? approach to fighting fat.

More than a third of residents in Memphis are obese, which the federal Centers for Disease Control defines as having a body mass index of 30 or higher. That translates, as one example, into a 5-foot-9-inch adult who weighs 203 or more pounds. People age 19 and younger with a BMI higher than 95% or more of their peers are considered obese.

Memphis? protracted work against that scourge appears to be paying off. After exceeding the statewide obesity rate for all but four years since 1997, Shelby County?s tally of overweight adults dropped below the statewide rate in 2011, according to the Institute for Obesity & Metabolism at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

That year, 61.5% of adults countywide and 66.5% of adults statewide were obese, according to Joan Randall, the institute?s administrative director and executive director of the Tennessee Obesity Task Force. The institute does not calculate city-by-city rates.

Vanderbilt demographers caution that two years of data are needed to affirm that what?s going on in Shelby County is a bona fide trend.

If it is, the change results from clarifying what?s at stake, says Renee Frazier, executive director of the decade-old Healthy Memphis Common Table, one of the nation?s 50 regional health improvement collaboratives. Such groups convene physicians, employers, hospitals, insurers and others with the goal of optimizing community health. Healthy Memphis is the sole such collaborative in the Mid-South.

?We?ve certainly captured the attention of policy-makers on this issue,? Frazier says.

But policy-makers alone won?t be the deciding factor in areas such as Memphis and Shelby County. There, African-Americans comprise 52.3% of residents, whites 43.6%, Latinos 5.8%, Asians 2.4% and those from other races make up less than 1%. A fifth of the population ? across lines of race, though the poor disproportionately are black and brown ? lives at or below the federal poverty level.

?There is such a correlation between poverty and obesity,? says Vanderbilt?s Randall. ?People who are poor try to stretch their budget by buying cheaper food, processed food. They also live in pockets of metropolitan or rural areas where they don?t necessarily have access to healthy food. ? There?s also a correlation between physical activity and income level.?

With sufficient education on topics including health and nutrition also lacking, especially among the poor, says Healthy Memphis? Frazier, battling the bulge requires help from many sectors.

A food truck vendor that Healthy Memphis contracted for an 800-person 2012 holiday party it arranged on behalf of Leadership Memphis ended up modifying his recipes after Healthy Memphis? dietitians revealed the caloric and nutritional values of what he was serving.

?We?re trying to establish a practice,? says Connie Binkowitz, Healthy Memphis? manager of equity and neighborhood transformation. ?It?s to jar people enough for them to begin to think, ?Oh, I didn?t even know that? and, from there, to make adjustments.?

In addition to those vendors, Frazier and Binkowitz cite the activities of such grass-roots players as retired corporate cost-accountant Adonna Collins, 77, a full-time volunteer who donates time to, among others, Healthy Memphis.

For a nonrelated charity fundraiser this Christmas, Collins is replacing the refined sugar and some of the water in her tried-and-true recipe for strawberry cake with frozen strawberries sweetened artificially and selling that version. She once enlisted fellow shoppers? help in a successful yearlong bid to get the Kroger store where she has been shopping since 1961 to re-stock its shelves with fruit canned in natural juices instead of high-fructose corn syrup.

She has dropped 40 pounds from a 5-foot-3-inch frame that carried 238.6 pounds at its peak. Her goal? ?Skinny,? she says, then guffaws. ?Or, really, 130 pounds, which, on me, really isn?t skinny. ? Mainly, I?m determined to feel good ? and even now, I tend to feel good ? and to share what I?ve learned about the glycemic index and so on.?

Broadly speaking, that?s an apt communal approach, says the Rev. Dr. Scott Morris, the physician-founder of Church Health Center Wellness, which operates pay-what-you-reasonably-can medical clinics for the uninsured and working poor and similarly priced memberships to its two-story, state-of-the-art gym, 10 minutes? drive from downtown Memphis.

Every member gets a monthly consultation with a trainer and nutritionist at Church Health, where blood pressure gauges are on the gym floor. Center staffers run the tests and keep files of members? fitness trajectories.

?We expect the people to work this program,? says Morris, a family practitioner and pastor of Memphis? St. John?s United Methodist Church. ?This is not a place to come and get on the treadmill with your headphones on. There are probably 10 people here at this very moment who weigh 300 pounds. ? We also probably have more success stories than I can count.?

Church Health has a mind-body-spirit ethos, says Morris, the doctor who diagnosed Henley?s diabetes. It considers the everyday financial, social and cultural concerns that can and sometimes do factor into obesity.

Collectively, the Henley clan has dropped 97 pounds thus far. (Henley?s youngest daughter, a college freshman, leads the pack, shedding 50 pounds. At 5 feet 8 inches tall, she used to weigh 230 pounds.)

?The data shows that Memphis is one of the most obese cities in the nation. When I look around, I see that. I saw it on myself,? Henley says.

?Even now, I?m still overweight and I?m still working at this. ? We saw what could happen within our own family, then we took it to our church, to other churches. The Bible says ?People perish for lack of knowledge.? Sometimes we?re just ignorant to things. ? That ignorance is part of what we?re trying to change.?

If you?re the kind of pet guardian who?s always looking for a way to make your furry companion?s life a little sweeter, installing a doggie door might be on your list of home improvement projects. Doggie doors allow your pets to go in and out of the house independently (yes, cats can use them, too), so pets don?t have to interrupt you when they want to go outside. Ignoring the inbox - a new morning mantra | Stuff.co.nz

If you, like most office workers, open your email first thing in the morning, then you might be setting yourself up for a horrible day and wasting hundreds of hours a year.

The work email inbox is a "pandora's box" of nitty-gritty detail, gossip and distractions that are best dealt with later in the morning, and pressing the "send receive" button as soon as you slouch in your seat is the worst way to start your day.

These are the somewhat controversial views of Danish organisational behavioural expert and corporate consultant Rasmus Hougaard, who has taken his new way of working to international companies such as Sony, General Electric and Danish brewer Carlsberg.

"Doing emails first thing in the day is so ineffective," says Hougaard, "it is the worst thing you can do at work."

His teachings, in demand in his home country of Denmark and around the world, are based on a philosophy called "mindfulness".

Mindfulness has it origins in Buddhist traditions, stretching back thousands of years to Yogism, Taoism and Judaism, and has been applied to improve personal relationships, and more recently, to enrich the work environment. It is also being used as a therapeutic application in clinical psychology, as well as stress reduction and improving well-being.

"Mindfulness is basically a method to make your mind more effective, to achieve the things you want to achieve in life," says Hougaard, who was in Australia this week to promote his "mindfulness in the workplace" philosophy and to attract new students and trainers to his camp.

"And if you are a professional, a corporate, you have some specific things you have to look out for. Mindfulness will help you be more effective, by making you more focused and thereby higher-performing."

The problem is, explains Hougaard, the mind has a tendency to wander, getting caught up in emotions and distractions, from sadness over a past relationship, for example, or mentally listing the weekend shopping list. These diversions can lead to miscommunication, poor work and wasted labour hours.

For Hougaard, and others in the mindfulness school of psychology, it's all about being in the present moment and paying attention in a particular way. The mantra is: "on purpose, in the present moment, and non -judgmentally".

Followers also believe the therapeutic application goes a long way to developing emotional resilience, enhancing people's capacity to focus and ultimately act on what is important and meaningful in their lives and at work.

This has obvious benefits for businesses whose distracted, unhappy staff waste thousands of hours each year.

Hougaard believes this daily wandering - who won?Big Brother?last night? What was that song on the radio this morning? Has someone taken my coffee mug? - can take up half of the average person's day.

"The mind is wandering almost half the time that we are awake," Hougaard says. "That means we are not really present with what we are doing half of the time, and that's quite a lot of time.

"If we can take this into the boardroom of any company, 10 people sitting around a room, there is a good chance that at least half of them are not present with this meeting, meaning the whole objective of the meeting is not achieved as fast and as high-quality as it could be if everyone was focused."

It's the same with work emails, says Hougaard, who is the founder and managing director of the Potential Project - a Denmark-based international provider of corporate based mindfulness training programs.

Hougaard, who has taught mindfulness to individuals and corporations in Europe, Asia and the US since 2000 and holds a Bachelor's degree in philosophy, says office workers are wasting up to three hours a day in the way they read and respond to emails because of the "wandering" mind and a lack of mindfulness.

And that unproductive time can be at its worst first thing in the morning.

"When you come in to work in the morning you have been just sleeping, and you have a complete open view of your working day. Most people know when they get in to work what they have to do, in terms of goals for the day, but then what happens is you open your mailbox and you are bombarded with all these nitty-gritty details and sometimes - many times - not very important emails.

"And your mind is absorbed into that rather than the goals and the priorities for the day.

"Studies show we can spend two to three hours every day at work on email and most of that time we are thinking about other things.

"We are allowing our mind to be distracted by incoming emails, or people talking around us, and we are basically not having the mental capabilities to stay focused on those emails and to deal with them one-by-one."

Emailing is a fast way of communicating, he teaches, but sometimes it can be too fast.

"A single word can be interpreted differently from the intention of the sender. It can cause minutes or hours of anger, confusion, doubt and other energy-consuming states of mind. Applying a short moment of mindfulness when emailing can save much time and energy. Mindful emailing is a way of training the mind to stay in the driver seat and never run on autopilot."

To help workers and companies to trawl faster, and more intelligently, through the flood of emails that wash up in the inbox every day, Hougaard has developed a morning plan for office workers when they first arrive at their desk:

* Take 5-10 minutes to get in the present moment. (This can include special breathing and meditation-like postures.)

* Take a few minutes to consider the main objectives and priorities for the day.

* For the next 30 to 90 minutes, focus on work duties (reports, organising meetings) that are of highest importance and require attention, creativity and productivity.

* Only after this, check your inbox.

You can expand your audience and greatly increase your profits by Internet marketing. Then get ready to embrace the low-cost, cutting-edge world of affiliate marketing. It gives you access to millions of computer users. Your online ads can reach a large customer base, while costing you little. Read this article for tips on how to benefit from this groundbreaking marketing technique.

Successful advertising creates an emotional bond between your clientele and your products. Your reader should be prompted to daydream about using your product. The advertising copy you write must get readers to imagine all of the fantastic features of your product.

For successful web marketing, use the word ?guaranteed? in your ads and related content. The value of a guarantee varies greatly depending on the company offering it, but the mere offer of a guarantee seem to allay many concerns. People work long hours to earn their salaries, and a strong guarantee makes them more likely to part with their hard-earned cash.

Choosing a good niche is key to having a successful Internet based business. You won?t have any luck selling cat toys to allergy sufferers. The key is to find out what your customers do on the Internet and what they are likely to look up on search engines. Market accordingly unless you happen to sell both of these!

Create a video in which you demonstrate the item that you are selling. Your customers can see how the product is actually used. Display the benefits of your product, as well as unadvertised features. Post your video on your blog, as well as other websites like Vimeo and Youtube.

You can measure conversion rates between site visitors and paying customers by using technology tools offered by different companies as a means of evaluating your online marketing campaigns. Statistics that show the quantity of visitors and sales can be useful in showing how a website is doing. One way to find statistic is the use of web trackers.

Email is a very important factor in communicating with your potential clients. Send them messages that have quality content, including updates on products and sales you may have. When your customer receives an email, you want them to absorb the information and feel as if they received interesting content, not spam. Using newsletters to maintain long term contact with customers demonstrates that you value their return business.

If you are good at creating an Ezine, it can be an on-going effective marketing technique where you can build a following with the people who subscribe to it. Use pictures of your family to add personality. Write facts about your personal life that people can relate to. Make sure to put something interesting in the Ezine (this could be any easy or fast way to achieve an important goal) to grab your readers attention and spark their curiosity.

One of the most important things you can do in Internet marketing is to research your competitors. Find out what they are doing, and do it better. This is a very important part of marketing on the Internet.

These tips will help to improve the profits, productivity, and sales of your business. Internet marketing is a good way to sell your services and products to a wider array of people. You should use these tips and strategies and gain customers.
